The next SMAC Project Meeting will take place in Cairo, Egypt, on 10–11 November 2026, hosted by the Confederation of Egyptian European Business Associations (CEEBA).

SMAC at Meditour Agadir 2026

The SMAC Project was represented at Meditour Agadir 2026, one of the leading Mediterranean forums dedicated to sustainable tourism, innovation and regional cooperation.

During the event, Estela Delgado, Area Manager for International Projects & Cooperation at ASCAME, presented the SMAC Project and joined the panel discussion on the future of Mediterranean tourism, highlighting how digital innovation, artificial intelligence and cross-border collaboration can support accommodation MSMEs in their transition towards more sustainable practices.

Bringing together institutions, tourism stakeholders and international organisations, Meditour 2026 provided an important platform to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships and advance a shared vision for a more resilient and sustainable tourism ecosystem across the Mediterranean.

Building a More Sustainable Future for Small Accommodation Businesses

The SMAC Project (Sustainability Model for Small and Medium Accommodation Establishments) is helping small accommodation providers across the Mediterranean region transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and competitive business models. With a total budget of €2.32 million and partners from 12 countries, the project will develop an innovative Sustainability Support Model (SSMA), an AI-powered recommendation tool (AIRET), and a network of certified sustainability mentors to support accommodation establishments in adopting greener practices.

Over the next 30 months, SMAC will work directly with 35 pilot accommodations, providing practical guidance, knowledge-sharing opportunities, and tailored sustainability solutions. By strengthening environmental performance and promoting sustainable tourism, the project contributes to the objectives of the European Green Deal, with 64% of its activities directly aligned with EU sustainability priorities.

Local stakeholders come together for sustainable tourism in Drama.

The first Local Stakeholders Group Meeting of the SMAC Project was successfully held at LAB.40, bringing together representatives from the accommodation and tourism sector to discuss sustainability challenges, digital transformation and future opportunities for local tourism development.

The meeting introduced the objectives of the SMAC Project and opened a constructive dialogue on how accommodation MSMEs can strengthen their sustainability performance through practical tools, collaboration and innovation.

A valuable first step towards shaping a more sustainable future for tourism in Drama.
