Scholars at Risk and Amnesty International have released a new, free, 90-minute course titled “Dangerous” Questions, Why Academic Freedom Matters. Created with input from academic and legal experts, this self-paced course explores what academic freedom means, how it connects to human rights and higher education values, and why it matters for scholars, students, and society. You’ll leave with the tools to defend academic freedom in your classroom, institution, or community and to stand up for education spaces that are free, inclusive, and open to all.

A coalition of leading European consortia, initiatives and organisations dedicated to the protection of researchers at risk and the promotion of academic freedom and autonomy, are launching a collective call urging Europe to champion academic freedom and protect researchers at risk. This coalition was gathered by Inspireurope+ for its 2025 Forum in Paris on 7th May which highlighted increasing global threats to academic freedom and the urgent need for Europe to strengthen its commitment to academic freedom and the protection of researchers at risk.

In 1946, only a year after the end of World War II, George Orwell wrote, “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” Almost 80 years later, it’s no less true. But what’s the struggle with? For Orwell, it’s the corruption of language; it’s propaganda and the manipulation of history; it’s the pressures to conform, outwardly and inwardly, that can come from political or ideological identity—or sometimes just the economic exigency of keeping a job. All of which has the power to suppress not only our ability to see what’s in front of our noses, but our ability to think about it for ourselves, fully in tune with our deepest convictions—if we don’t struggle against it. Now, though, that struggle is being transformed by an increasingly omnipresent digital environment built for screen addiction. It’s something we’re going to need help with.

Πρόσκληση σε Ημερίδα του Έργου Inspireurope+ Supporting Researchers at Risk
Έχουμε την τιμή να σας προσκαλέσουμε στην Ημερίδα/Regional Outreach Workshop (SE Europe) του Προγράμματος, η οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 13 Μαρτίου 2025, στο Κέντρο Διάδοσης Ερευνητικών Αποτελεσμάτων (ΚΕ.Δ.Ε.Α) του Α.Π.Θ. (με δυνατότητα και διαδικτυακής παρακολούθησης).
Το πρόγραμμα Inspireurope+ (2022-2025, χρηματοδότηση MSCA-Horizon Europe) αποτελεί συνέχεια του Inspireurope (2019-2022) και αποσκοπεί στη διεύρυνση του ευρωπαϊκού δικτύου υποστήριξης για ερευνητές και ακαδημαϊκούς από όλον τον κόσμο, που υφίστανται διακρίσεις, διώξεις, εκτοπισμούς, απειλές για την καριέρα τους ή και για την ίδια τους τη ζωή.
Το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο ως εταίρος και στα δύο αυτά προγράμματα έχει, εδώ και έξι χρόνια, τον κεντρικό συντονιστικό ρόλο στις δράσεις για την Ανατολική, Νότια και Νοτιο-ανατολική Ευρώπη με έμφαση στις χώρες της Βαλκανικής.
Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η Ημερίδα της 13ης Μαρτίου 2025 έχει ως στόχο, με αφετηρία τη συζήτηση για τις θεμελιώδεις ακαδημαϊκές αξίες, να αναδείξει τη σημασία που έχει η υποστήριξη ακαδημαϊκών/ερευνητών «σε κίνδυνο» όχι μόνο για τους ίδιους αλλά και για την προάσπιση της ακαδημαϊκής ελευθερίας, της ερευνητικής προόδου και αριστείας. Αποσκοπεί, επίσης, να συζητήσει τις σχετικές προκλήσεις αλλά και να παρουσιάσει καλές πρακτικές που θα αυξήσουν την ετοιμότητα των ακαδημαϊκών ιδρυμάτων και των ενδιαφερομένων εργοδοτών του μη ακαδημαϊκού τομέα να φιλοξενήσουν/απασχολήσουν ερευνητές «σε κίνδυνο», καθώς και τα αμοιβαία οφέλη που προκύπτουν, όταν εφαρμόζονται οι αρχές της διαφορετικότητας, της ισότητας και της ένταξης (αρχές D.E.I.) στα ΑΕΙ.
Η εκδήλωση θα διεξαχθεί στα αγγλικά, με τη συμμετοχή ακαδημαϊκών, ερευνητών, διοικητικών στελεχών Πανεπιστημίων, αλλά και εκπροσώπων μη ακαδημαϊκών φορέων και ΜΚΟ από όλη την Ευρώπη.

Preparing HEIs in Southeastern Europe to support Researchers at Risk
The webinar is addressed to administrative staff as well as interested academics of universities in Southeastern Europe. It aims to raise their awareness and preparedness for hosting Scholars at Risk by sharing good practices and discussing possible challenges and appropriate administrative answers. The support of all European HEIs, including those in Southeast Europe, is even more needed as the numbers of at-risk scholars continue to rise globally.
