Sakis has been battling an ear infection and has a few other issues going on with his teeth. He’s had to have blood tests and meds - all of which adds up very quickly. Can you kindly help towards his vet bill? Your help means the world.

Sakis originally came to Maria because he was about to be returned to the streets by the municipality, after being treated for a broken jaw. Maria knew this was a terrible idea and stepped in to offer him sanctuary. But she can only help cats like Sakis long-term if she has your support. We need governments to step up for strays. It cannot be the case that tiny, incredibly overstretched rescues are the ones shouldering the burden for the stray animal crisis. Neutering, vaccination and subsidised vet care HAS to come from governments.

Instead you see tokenistic actions, like the odd feeding station for strays, which doesn’t get maintained or, worse still, in some places, campaigns to shoot and poison strays.

Maria tries her very best to help the stray, abandoned and neglected cats of Chania in Crete, but it feels like a drop in the ocean when there are so many more in need of help and the numbers are increasing every day.

The majority of cats have disabilities, long term health conditions or need ongoing treatment and care. It costs a huge amount just to feed them - never mind the vet costs!

It would be amazing for more cats to go to loving homes, but Maria literally takes on the cats who have nowhere else to go - chronic conditions like FeLV that need careful managing and quarantine, disabled cats, cats who would basically be classed as feral because they’ve had little to no exposure to humans, older cats who need vet care.

When the whole world is overrun with millions of cats in need and Crete itself is dealing with strays in their hundreds of thousands, realistically (though it’s harsh to say) - who is going to adopt these cats AND give them the right care.

Maria mostly acts as a sanctuary for cats in need and this comes at a great cost - the small amount of cats that are adopted don’t come with adoption fees and she faces huge vet bills.

Most of the cats have special needs such as health issues and disabilities, which is exactly why they came to Maria’s Cathouse and why it’s almost impossible for them to be adopted.

The cost of living is killing is - directly, because everything is so expensive and still increasing and indirectly, because donations are of course down and abandonment of animals is up.

I’m not sure where this will end up - what will happen to stray and abandoned cats around the world. Because right now it seems to be getting worse everywhere, and not just here in Crete 😢

It’s as if they know they are so totally and utterly reliant on the kindness of a person to survive, after enduring life on the harsh streets of Crete. Katina is the most affectionate cat you could ever meet - she simply adores people.
