🌍 On today's World Environment Day, we highlight one of the most immediate and tangible impacts of climate change on our cities: rising temperatures and increasing heat stress for citizens. In the Metropolitan area of Athens, high temperatures and more frequent heatwaves are significantly affecting quality of life, particularly in densely built neighbourhoods with limited green space and inadequate shade. The quality of the urban environment and access to cool public spaces are becoming critical issues for civil and social protection, public health, and climate resilience.
🇪🇺 This challenge is not limited to Greece. The recent heatwave in Western Europe serves as a reminder that adapting to extreme heat is now a shared European priority. In this context, the European project Green Routes Intelligent Districts (GRID) is developing and testing innovative urban planning solutions aimed at reducing urban heat and improving thermal comfort in public spaces. By generating practical knowledge, methodological tools and transferable experience, the project seeks to support other European cities facing similar climate challenges.
📊 Through four infographics, we present some of the key findings of a survey conducted in the Metropolitan Athens area as part of the GRID project. The survey questionnaire was designed by the ENA Institute for Alternative Policies in collaboration with the National and Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών - University of Athens and Commonspace Co-op.
The findings show that heat stress affects almost the entire population, but its effects are not experienced equally across households and neighbourhoods. Extreme heat is not socially neutral: it disproportionately affects those with fewer resources, limited access to quality public spaces, or who live in areas facing higher levels of thermal exposure.
🌳 The message is clear: citizens are calling on public authorities to take the lead in protecting people from extreme heat by creating better neighbourhoods, cooler routes, more greenery, more shade, and smarter heat adaptation solutions.
