The Athens International Digital Film Festival (AIDFF) was founded in 2011 and, for more than twelve years, has been one of the most vibrant and creative artistic institutions in the city of Athens. With passion, dedication, and vision, it supports both contemporary Greek and international film production, highlighting digital cinema as an equal and pioneering field of artistic expression.

The Festival was established at a time when digital means of film production were still considered unconventional and digital films were not yet fully accepted by the cinematic establishment. Anticipating the technological and aesthetic transition that was about to reshape the art of cinema, the AIDFF was among the first to consciously include the term “Digital” in its title, assuming a pioneering role in the legitimization and promotion of digital film creation.

Responding to the gap between the rapidly evolving technological reality and the conservatism of traditional film institutions, the AIDFF offered a platform to thousands of emerging filmmakers from around the world — artists who, until then, often had to disguise their digital works as “traditional” in order to be screened. The Festival broke these barriers, providing a free and open space for the cinema of the new era.

The inclusion of the term “Digital” in the Festival’s identity was never a mere technical reference but rather an ideological and artistic statement. Today, although digital technology has become the dominant standard in film production, the term retains a profound meaning. It represents the ongoing evolution of art through technology, the constant search for new expressive tools, and the redefinition of the cinematic experience.

🎥 In the middle of the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes, CEPI and Eurocinema brought together a group of European producers for a policy meeting with Members of the European Parliament.

Producers Isabelle Degeorges (Gaumont Télévision, France), Filip Bobinski (Dramedy Productions, Czech Republic), Louise Vesth (Zentropa, Denmark), Simon Arnal (Haut et Court, France) and Christoph Friedel (Pandora Film Verleih, Germany) engaged in a substantive exchange with MEPs Sabine Verheyen, Diana Riba i Giner, Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, Manuela Ripa and Sandro Ruotolo.

European storytelling is crucial for Europe and for our democracies - every MEP, CEPI and Eurocinema producers agreed to that.
The producers highlighted: being part of the MEDIA programme means being part of something bigger, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻.

Independent producers are the true warrant of diverse, pertinent, and innovative European works, portraying our stories on our screens.
Conversations like this one are exactly what European cultural policy needs. All that we want is legislation that ensures a level playing field for the preservation of our culture.

Thank you to the MEPs for their attentiveness and genuine engagement.

Europe needs cinema. Cinema needs Europe. 🎬🇪🇺

Thousands of cinema professionals, including prominent directors, authors, actors and industry leaders from across Europe and beyond have come together around this simple but urgent message: Europe needs cinema. Cinema needs Europe.

They have signed an Open Letter calling on the European Commission, the European Parliament and Member States to preserve and reinforce the programme as a major instrument of support for European independent cinema.

For more than 35 years, MEDIA has helped European stories travel across borders supporting independent production, theatrical distribution, festivals, training, and a thriving audiovisual ecosystem across the continent.

Today, that success story is under threat. As part of negotiations on the EU budget for 2028–2034, the European Commission proposes to integrate MEDIA into the new AgoraEU programme. While the overall budget may increase, the current proposal offers no guaranteed, dedicated funding for the film and audiovisual sector. The text remains vague with no assurance that the key actions that made MEDIA successful will continue.

The open letter celebrates MEDIA's role in promoting cultural diversity, artistic freedom, jobs, innovation and European soft power, and calls for the programme's future to be secured and its resources reinforced.

➡️ The petition is still open. Add your name here: https://lnkd.in/eHjcBEQy

At Cannes this year, the slogan "Europe needs cinema" will appear on badges worn by attendees, a small but visible sign of solidarity for European cinema.

This letter was initiated by a coalition of European associations including Europa International, Europa Distribution Association, EUROPEAN PRODUCERS CLUB - CLUB DES PRODUCTEURS EUROPEENS, FERA, Society of Audiovisual Authors, ATC (Audiovisual Training Coalition) and FAME.
