Play isn’t just fun, it’s essential for every child’s development. It’s how children learn, grow, and heal. Approximately 4 in 10 children aged 2–4 years do not engage in enough stimulating activities with caregivers at home; around 1 in 10 children of this age do not engage in any such activities with caregivers. This can lead to emotional neglect, insecurity, and behavioural issues that persist into adulthood.
Roughly 1 in 7 children under age 5 do not have toys or playthings at home. The biggest barrier to play is often adults, teachers, parents, caregivers, and staff. As adults, we sometimes forget, neglect, or don’t realise the importance of play. Every child has the right to play, and play contributes to children’s wellbeing and learning.
For us Save the Children, Nigeria, play is essential to children’s lives and well-being. We support children’s right to play wherever they are: at home, in their communities, in school or in informal learning spaces, as well as in places like health centres, clinics, and distribution points. Every play space should be a safe space!
Every child deserves to play, no matter where they live or what they face.
