Before there was a mission, there was a childhood shaped by nature. 🌱

In Episode 2 of our interview series, Omar Darboe speaks about the role nature played in his childhood β€” and how those early experiences helped shape the person he became.

Growing up close to the land can leave a deep mark. It can teach respect, resilience, and a different way of seeing the future. For Omar, those roots still live inside the work of Bamboo Foundation Gambia today.

This video is a small but meaningful glimpse into the personal story behind the project.

Today the 6th of March 2026, Bamboo Foundation Gambia (BFG) received two German volunteers at our Bamboo Nursery Garden and Plantation site in Dumbuto Village for a 2 week long stay. They appreciate the work we are doing in the country for a sustainable green development using the Bamboo based Solutions (BbS) for rural communities. We are very happy to receive them in the garden.
Located in Dumbuto Village, Kiang West District in the Lower River Region of the Gambia, Our Bamboo Garden and Plantation Nurseries serve some of the most vulnerable communities, farmers, women and youth groups in the country against Climate Change to enhance livelihood support systems.
Our Mission is Simple yet Powerful: To empower local communities with Bamboo based Solutions (BbS), as an alternative solution to timber and plastic products, raising awareness and building capacities through Public Education and to transform local communities into climate resilient society.
Our Core belief: People are both the reason for and the means through which Change is achieved.
Everyone is Welcome to join our team and feel free to contact us. Climate Change is a threat to the Lives and Livelihoods of our poor rural communities in the LRR and beyond. BFG for a Better Future.
President, Bamboo Foundation Gambia (BFG)

Today is a special moment for us. πŸ’š
We’ve launched our new YouTube channel for Bamboo Foundation Gambia β€” and our first songs are now online. They’re intentionally very different, because we want music for real life moments: to unwind after a hard day, to recharge and feel stronger, to lift your mood β€” and sometimes simply to dance, be happy and celebrate.

And now comes the one simple request that truly anyone can help with:
Please take a quick look at the channel β€” and if you like the music, subscribe.
It’s free, takes only a few seconds, but it helps us more than you might think. Every new subscriber makes it more likely that our message reaches more people β€” and that this turns into real support for bamboo projects in Gambia: jobs for families, more independence, and less plastic pollution in the environment.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who supports us. πŸ™πŸ’š

Bamboo farming and processing are well suited to the twin concerns of livelihood enhancement and environmental protection – the key components for developing countries like the Gambia. Bamboo is ideal for massive rehabilitation of degraded areas. It is superior to trees in grassland areas and capable of poly cyclic harvesting with natural capacity to regenerate through its rhizomes. It has an interlocking root system that can inhibit soil erosion.
After sugarcane, bamboo is said to be the best solar energy conservator in nature and has a vastly lower need for water and is a critical element in balancing the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Bamboo plays a very important role in conserving soil and water. Bamboo is eminently suitable for housing and general engineering because of its high strength/weight ratio, phenomenal flexibility and tubular anatomy. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the bamboo plant has more than 2,000 uses.

Bamboo as a sustainable building material. Today the 14th January 2026, Bamboo Foundation Gambia (BFG) join a week-long practical handiwork with students from the University of West England (UWE) to construct a Bamboo Shed and a playing ground for children visiting the Abuko Nature Reserve.
BFG inspires to improve the design development and the utility of the bamboo by blending the traditional skills already available with the local people with the modern technological developments.
