ADDAD Gambia Champions Labor Rights and Social Justice at National Tripartite ILO Reporting Session πŸ‡¬πŸ‡² We are proud to announce that ADDAD Gambia successfully participated in a crucial 4-day tripartite reporting session on fundamental International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions. The high level exercise was held at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MOTIE), under the strategic leadership of the Director of Employment.

As a dedicated member of the Tripartite Committee, ADDAD Gambia stood alongside with Government representatives, Employers' organizations, Trade Unions, and fellow Civil Society Organizations to review and report on the Gambia's compliance with eight core international labor standards:

C29 (Forced Labour) & C105 (Abolition of Forced Labour)
C87 (Freedom of Association) & C98 (Collective Bargaining)
C100 (Equal Remuneration) and C111 (Discrimination)
C138 (Minimum Age) and C182 (Worst Forms of Child Labour)

ADDAD Gambia is Committed through this vital collaborative mechanism, to ensures that civil society perspectives directly shape national labor policies. We remain unwavering in our mission to protect vulnerable domestic workers, eliminate workplace discrimination, and advocate for decent work environments across the nation.

We extend our gratitude to the Director of Employment and all tripartite partners for a highly productive four days of social dialogue. Together, we are building a fairer, more inclusive future for the Gambian workforce.

We are deeply shaken and outraged by the traumatic testimonies of our fellow domestic workers working under the Gambian Embassy in Russia. If these allegations are proven true, they represent an obvious violation of international labor standards, Gambian law (Labour Act 2023), and basic human dignity.
It is unacceptable that individuals representing the state abroad are the very ones accused of breaking human rights laws and degrading domestic work.

Action and investigation need to be done to confirm the following:

β€’ Force Labor and Human Trafficking
β€’ Financial exploitation and Wage Theft
β€’ Deprivation of liberty
β€’ Extreme labor abuse

If those who are supposed to protect us are abusing us then there is a problem, domestic work is work and domestic workers rights are also human rights.

Two domestic staff members employed at the Gambian Embassy in Russia, under Ambassador Ebrima Ceesay and his wife Kaddy Fofana, have described what they say are extremely harsh and restrictive working conditions since their recruitment from The Gambia in 2023.

The staff state that they are not permitted to use mobile phones and were informed that such restrictions were imposed under official instructions. They also claim they are not allowed to leave the residence freely or communicate with anyone outside their workplace environment.

According to their account, they are instructed to surrender their monthly salaries, which they were told amount to D20,000, while they believe the actual salary is closer to D60,000. They further allege they do not have access to their full earnings and are not permitted to manage their own income.

They also report having no rest days, long working hours extending late into the night, and early morning resumption of duties. When ill, they say they are required to cover their own medical expenses. In addition, they claim they are expected to remain awake until their employers retire for the night, sometimes as late as 1–2 a.m.

The staff further allege that during travel arrangements, they were forced to relinquish personal belongings due to baggage constraints caused by their employers.

They state that they have not been allowed to return to The Gambia despite their requests, and describe their situation as one of severe restriction and exploitation.

Solidarity in Action πŸ’ͺ🏾πŸ’ͺ🏾Gambian Workers Demand Decent Work

May 1st 2026, the Trade Union (GAMTUB) and its members and collaborators including the Domestic Workers Rights Protection Association Addad Gambia, co-hosted a powerful International Workers' Day celebration to push the agenda of decent work and worker rights

Under the 2026 theme of strengthening rights against economic inequality, we marched and gathered to demand
A living minimum wage Stronger protections for domestic workers. Fair working conditions and social security. Inclusions because domestic workers are mostly women and girls

It is time to recognize that workers are the backbone of The Gambia’s development, not just a statistic.
Solidarity forever

ADDAD Gambia is proud to have hosted the AWID Movement Hub in Farafenni.

Our mission is clear to ensure "Justice Behind Closed Doors."
Farafenni is more than just a border town, it is home to many domestic workers who deserve dignity and respect.
