Knowing which fire extinguisher to reach for can make all the difference in an emergency. Different fires require different solutions—using the wrong one can sometimes make a situation worse!

Here is a quick cheat sheet to keep your workplace and home safe:

* **Water:** Best for organic materials like wood, paper, and textiles. **Never** use on electrical or liquid fires.
* **Dry Powder:** The versatile "all-rounder" for wood, liquids, gases, and electrical equipment.
* **Foam:** Effective for wood and flammable liquids.
* **CO2:** The go-to for electrical fires and flammable liquids. Avoid using in confined spaces.
* **Wet Chemical:** Specifically designed for cooking oil fires (Class F) and organic materials.

**Safety Tip:** Always ensure your extinguishers are serviced and that your team knows where they are located.

*Pedestrian Safety 🚦*

Walking is part of our daily routine—heading to work 🏢, school 🎒, the market 🛒, or places of worship ⛪🕌. Yet pedestrians remain one of the most vulnerable road users ⚠️. A split second of distraction 📱 or a speeding vehicle 🚗💨 can turn an ordinary walk into a life-threatening situation.

*Why Pedestrian Safety Matters ❗*
Pedestrians have little or no physical protection compared to drivers 🚘. Road accidents involving pedestrians often lead to serious injuries 🤕 or loss of life 💔.

*Essential Pedestrian Safety Practices:*
✔️ Use pavements, footpaths, and pedestrian bridges whenever available
✔️ Cross only at zebra crossings or traffic lights 🚦
✔️ Stop ✋, look 👀 left–right–left, and listen 👂 before crossing
✔️ Avoid distractions like phones and earphones while crossing 📵🎧
✔️ Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they’ve seen you 👁️👁️
✔️ Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night 🌙✨
✔️ Stay alert around junctions, blind spots, and heavy vehicles 🚛
✔️ Assist children 👶, the elderly 👵, and persons with disabilities ♿ when crossing busy roads

*Shared Responsibility 🤝*
Pedestrian safety is everyone’s duty. Drivers must slow down 🐢 near schools 🏫, markets 🛍️, residential areas 🏘️, and bus stops 🚏, and always give way to pedestrians at crossings 🚸.

By staying alert 🧠, obeying traffic rules 📜, and respecting one another on the road ❤️, we can prevent accidents and save lives. Every step you take safely makes a difference 👣✅.

*Safety in the Era of AI & Automation 🤖🛡️*

Technology is transforming the workplace faster than many of us can keep up with. Machines make decisions, systems run themselves, and tasks we once did manually are now handled by AI. It’s exciting — but it can also feel unfamiliar, even uncomfortable.

*A Workplace That Feels Different* ⚙️
Many workers now find themselves standing beside equipment that “thinks” and acts on its own. You press one button, and the machine does the rest. But this also means one wrong signal, one misunderstanding, or one missed alert can put people at risk. And let’s be honest — sometimes we trust the machine too much. Other times, we don’t trust it enough.

*Real Risks Real People Face* 🚨
- A worker assumes the robot arm has stopped — but it hasn’t.
- A system makes an automatic correction no one expected.
- An operator hesitates because they’re not fully confident with a new control panel.
- A cyber-attack shuts down a safety system workers rely on.
- A technician skips training because the tech seems “too complex”.

*Practical Ways to Stay Safe* 🧠✔️
- Ask questions during training — no one understands new tech instantly
- Never rely solely on automation; always double-check system actions
- Keep emergency stops accessible and functional
- Report unusual machine behaviour immediately
- Treat cybersecurity as part of safety — not just an IT issue
- Support colleagues who may be struggling with new systems

*Why This Matters* ❤️
Behind every system is a person — a worker trying to do their job, a technician trying to solve problems, and a family waiting for someone to return home safely. As advanced as AI becomes, it will never replace human judgement, experience, or intuition.

The Future Is High-Tech — But Safety Will Always Be Human. 🤝

💔 *The Human Cost of Unsafe Decisions*;*How Workplace Hazards Impact Lives* 🏢🔍

Workplace hazards don’t just produce statistics — they change lives. Behind every incident report is a father who won’t return home the same, a mother whose dreams were cut short, or a young worker whose future was altered in seconds. When safety rules are ignored, the impact spreads far beyond the individual. Families lose breadwinners, children lose role models, and communities lose contributors. A single unsafe decision can create a ripple effect of pain, financial strain, and emotional trauma that lasts for years. The memories of an accident linger long after the physical wounds heal, affecting mental health and relationships 😔⚠️.

*Prevention is a Moral Responsibility* ✅👍
Yet many of these tragedies are avoidable. Simple precautions, proper training, the right PPE, and a culture that values people over shortcuts can prevent a lifetime of regret. Safety isn’t just a requirement — it is a moral responsibility. By prioritizing safety, we protect not only workers but also their families, colleagues, and the community. It’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and safe to return home each day ❤️🏠.

*Choose Safety Today* 🌟✨
Let’s choose safer paths today so no family has to pay the ultimate price tomorrow. Because every worker is more than a number — every worker is someone’s whole world. Start by reporting hazards, wearing PPE, and encouraging others to do the same. Together, we can build a culture of safety that lasts. 🚀

*The HSE Struggle: Making Safety Work Everywhere 😊*

The Challenge: One Size Doesn’t Fit All 🌍

You know, it’s easy to draft safety rules in a boardroom, but applying them on the ground in the real world? Totally different story.

Imagine wearing a thick hard hat in scorching heat ☀️, or trying to do a fire drill in a remote village with no water 💧. It doesn’t always fit, right?

*The Problem with Global Standards 📜*

Here’s the thing: global safety standards are important, but they often miss the mark locally. Whether it’s a construction site in Lagos, a factory in Mumbai, or a farm in rural Brazil, the context is different. We need to adapt them to fit the environment, infrastructure, and culture. That means lighter PPE for tropical climates, mobile clinics for remote areas, or encouraging open communication in hierarchical workplaces 🤝.

*The Solution: Adapt, Involve, Improve 🔄*

Safety isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about people going home safe 🏠. So, let’s make it practical. Involve local teams, adjust the rules, and keep improving.

*Contractor vs Staff Safety: Let’s Level the Playing Field 😊*

Ever noticed how safety standards can feel different for contractors compared to permanent staff? It’s a common challenge, but it’s one we need to tackle. After all, everyone deserves to go home safe, no matter who they work for 🏠.

Here’s the thing: contractors often face more risks. They might be new to the site, unfamiliar with specific hazards, or feel pressure to meet deadlines ⏳. Meanwhile, permanent staff are usually more embedded in the company’s safety culture. The gap in training, supervision, and reporting can lead to accidents—and that affects everyone ⚠️.

*So, what can we do?*
1. *Treat everyone equally ✅*: Apply the same safety rules to contractors and staff.
2. *Communicate clearly 📢*: Make sure contractors know the site’s risks and protocols.
3. *Encourage openness 🔍*: Create a no-blame culture for reporting incidents.
4. *Work together 🤝*: Involve contractors in safety planning.
5. *Check in regularly 📅*: Audit their work and offer feedback.

Safety isn’t a checkbox—it’s a shared responsibility. By bridging this gap, we protect our teams, reduce risks, and build a stronger workplace 💪.

Introduction
On 5 November 2025, the USET Student Union, in collaboration with OSHAssociation The Gambia, successfully conducted a seminar on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). The seminar was organized with the objective of increasing students’ understanding of workplace safety, risk management, and health standards across various sectors.

The seminar provided an insightful overview of the current Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) landscape in The Gambia, highlighting the progress, gaps, and ongoing initiatives supporting workplace safety across sectors. Participants were informed that while national awareness of OSH standards is increasing, significant challenges remain, including limited enforcement mechanisms, low compliance among enterprises, and a general need for specialized training and structured safety management systems.

The seminar aimed to:
• Raise awareness about hazards and risks in workplace environments.
• Introduce students to internationally recognized OSH best practices.
• Encourage a proactive, safety-first mindset among emerging professionals.
• Promote youth participation in strengthening a safety culture in The Gambia.

Opening Remarks was Delivered by Neneh, who emphasized the importance of safety education for university students preparing to enter professional fields.

The Presentations were Focused on “The Importance of Safety in the Workplace”, highlighting common workplace risks, preventive measures, and the role of personal responsibility. Representatives outlined opportunities for professional training, certification and membership with OSH.

The seminar received strong participation from USET students who demonstrated great enthusiasm and curiosity. The key outcomes included:
