THE FIRST ORDINARY SESSION OF THE 10TH NATIONAL YOUTH PARLIAMENT

Alhamdulillah, I have finally been sworn in as the National Youth Parliamentarian for Lower Baddibou Constituency. I am very grateful and honored by the trust the youth of Lower Baddibou have placed in me, and I am ready and willing to serve them to their expectations.

Day 1️⃣
The first motion discussed was strengthening accountability and the fight against corruption in The Gambia.

“ I contributed my belief that corruption has caused more harm than civil wars due to the lack of medicine in hospitals and the poor construction of our roads, which has led to a series of accidents claiming many lives. “

Day 2️⃣
The matter of the day was the strengthening of the relationship between security forces and citizens, particularly young people, in promoting civic rights, peace, and national stability.

“ I recommend that the police exercise decorum in their operations; young people are their brothers and sisters and should not be subjected to abuse under the so-called Colonial Public Order Act of 1963. “

The second motion was urging the government to fully implement the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2021.

“ I expressed that the act has been in place for almost 5 years, and we must question why its implementation is delayed. Sometimes, we must be radical to achieve our goals; not every demand needs to be diplomatic. “

Day 3️⃣
The first motion focused on strengthening youth and women's participation in politics and governance.

“ Yes! We will support you and will empower you as well, but the support should start from you first; only then can we add our support to encourage your leadership. “

The second motion urged the government and its partners to strengthen national climate action and youth-led environmental initiatives in response to the growing threats of climate change in The Gambia.

“ If we want better climate conditions, we must establish a climate revolution movement to protect our reserved land and resources. “

This has been an insightful youth parliamentary session, and I believe every youth parliamentarian represented their constituencies fully. Thank you.

Regards,
Hon. Abubacarr Makalo

📢 HUMAN TRAFFICKING ALARM
📅 Date: 22nd October 2025
Issued by: Lower Baddibou District Youth Committee
From: The Office of the Secretary General
(On behalf of Chairperson Jaila B. Gaye)

The Lower Baddibou District Youth Committee stands in deep solidarity with the family of Cheikh Touré, the young Senegalese goalkeeper whose life was tragically cut short on 18th October 2025.

Cheikh was deceitfully lured to Ghana by criminal traffickers under the false promise of a football trial in Morocco. These imposters kidnapped him and cruelly demanded ransom from his family—who, unable to meet the demands in time, were left heartbroken when the perpetrators took his life in an inhumane act.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder of the growing threat of human trafficking and the deceptive tactics used to exploit the dreams of young people across Africa.

We join the Senegalese authorities in demanding swift and uncompromising justice from the Government of Ghana, to ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.

Let the death of Cheikh Touré be a wake-up call to all young people in The Gambia and across Africa:
Be vigilant. Question every opportunity that seems too good to be true. Seek trusted guidance before making life-changing decisions abroad.

Together, let us raise awareness, protect our youth, and put an end to this cruel network of exploitation.

Lower Baddibou District Youth Committee
Date: 29th August 2025
By: Secretary General: Abdou Hydara
To: Lower Baddibou District Youth Committee
C.c: Regional Youth Committee, NBR.
Summary Report from Video Footage of the First Ordinary Session/Sitting by Children National Assembly Members, The Gambia

Purpose:
To listen to the concerns and issues raised by our children that are hindering the development of children in society.
First Ordinary Session of Children National Assembly – 2025

A new Speaker was elected and sworn into office:
Hon. Babacarr Sowe of NBR
Hon. Babacarr Sowe, as Speaker, chaired the session.

Key Contributions from Honorable Members Regarding Regional Issues and Proposed Solutions

Below are the most frequent complaints or issues of concern raised by the majority of members:

1) Education

a) Inadequate learning materials in schools and poor learning facilities, especially in rural areas.
By Hon. (NBR, URR, LRR, and CRR)

b) Complaints about students walking long distances to attend school. Some members noted that this issue has been raised previously but remains unaddressed by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
By Hon. (NBR, URR, LRR, and CRR)

c) Concerns about unqualified and unethical teachers in schools.
General concern across all regions. By Hon.

d) Madarasa schools (Arabic schools) have overloaded teachers, with one teacher handling grades 1 to 6.
By Hon. Rep. Madarasa (CRR)

e) Unregulated Madarasa schools are exposing children to street hustling and forced farm labor, leading to physical and mental health problems.
By Hon. (WCR)

f) Students in Madarasa schools are required to pay school fees, which has led to high dropout rates.
By Hon. Rep. Madarasa (WCR)

g) Some schools in CRR lack access to running water, which negatively affects lessons and student health.
By Hon. (CRR)

2) Issues Affecting Children and the Girl Child in Society

a) Rampant r**e of minors has become common, and although cases are reported, no action is taken. For example, a r**e case in Busumbala involving a minor has remained unresolved for almost two years, and the perpetrator is still walking free.
By Hon. (KM)

b) Issues of early marriage, forced marriage, child labor, drug abuse, and exposure to nightclubs are negatively affecting children's education and future, while also increasing poverty levels in society.
General concern across all regions (Hons)

c) Lack of safety, poor health conditions, food insecurity, and malnutrition among children in URR.
By Hon. (URR)

d) Lack of children's playgrounds and recreational facilities in Banjul.
By Hon. (BJL)

3) Concerns Raised by the Disabled Representative

a) Disabled students face challenges and discrimination in schools, including bullying from classmates. When reported to teachers, no action is taken. This must be stopped.
By Hon. Disabled Rep. (KM)

b) Sign language is different from English. The government should recognize this and work to integrate sign language into school settings.
By Hon. Disabled Rep. (WCR)

🌱 Lower Baddibou Youth Go Green! – Summer Tree Planting 2025 🌱

In our fight against climate change, the Lower Baddibou Children & Youth Committee (LBCYC), in partnership with Master Njundou Foundation and sponsored by Dr. Ousman Gajigo, has launched the 2025 Summer Tree Planting Initiative.

This year, 150 mango trees are being planted in Njawara, Toro Bah, and Kerr Ardo, with communities taking full responsibility for their care to ensure sustainability.

We also celebrated the success of our 2024 planting in Njie K***aring, where 78.5% of trees survived thanks to strong community commitment—especially the women who led the care! 🌳

✅ Our Goal: A greener, healthier Lower Baddibou.
🤝 Our Approach: Community ownership, youth leadership, and sustainable practices.
💡 Our Message: “Do not take a tree if you can’t take care of it—it is a sin.”

Together, we are planting hope, shade, and a better future. 🌍💚
