ANIMAL ADVOCATES ASSOCIATION - THE GAMBIA was honored to Participate in General Meeting with Group Naru Gorr
at N.B.R upper Nuimi on the 4th May 2026, for their Annual General Meeting.

Group Naru Gorr is a highly dedicated and community-based organization, recognized as the very first community animal welfare association in the region. Composed primarily of equine owners, specifically proud horses and donkey owners, this group is committed to ensuring the well-being of their animals and upholding the Five Fundamental Freedoms. What makes this group truly special is its composition; it brings together people of various age groups, with strong representation from the youth, all united by their love and care for animals.

The representative of Animal welfare advocates was Hon. Malick Kah. During the deliberations, he highlighted several key points, including:

- The vital role that equines play in the socio-economic development of local communities.
- The importance of animal welfare practices in maintaining healthy animals.
- How proper care directly promotes and improves the livelihoods of donkey owners.

The meeting was not only informative but also very lively and inspiring. It concluded with a showcase of the donkeys, and horses where members proudly displayed their animals. It was truly heartwarming to witness the deep respect these owners have for their animals, treating them not just as working partners, but as valued members of their families.

We are proud to support such initiatives that empower communities while championing animal welfare.

Warm regards,

Together we'll Improve Animal Welfare in The Gambia 🇬🇲 ♥️

*AWAAG INTERNAL HANDINGOVER*

Issued: 9th March, 2026

On the 8th of March 2026, the 3rd Executive Council of AWAAG successfully conducted an internal handingover to the incoming 4th Executive Council of AWAAG. This important process marks the formal transfer of responsibilities, institutional knowledge, and leadership duties from the outgoing executive to the newly elected council.

The handingover was carried out in line with the provisions of the organization’s Constitution and the established transitional framework designed to ensure continuity, accountability, and effective governance. During the process, key documents, reports, and operational guidelines were shared to brief the incoming council on ongoing programs, administrative procedures, financial matters, and strategic priorities of the organization.

This structured transition is part of AWAAG’s commitment to maintaining strong institutional systems that support stability, transparency, and sustainability within the organization. By adhering to these internal processes, AWAAG continues to promote responsible leadership and ensure that each executive council builds upon the progress of its predecessor.

The organization remains confident that the incoming 4th Executive Council will continue to advance the vision, mission, and objectives of AWAAG while strengthening its impact and service to its members and the broader community.

Man Sentenced to Six Months’ Imprisonment for Animal Cruelty!

A man has been sentenced to six months in prison for animal cruelty following an investigation by the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. The case was brought to the attention of the authorities after reports that a donkey named Jambarr had been severely abused by its owner.

According to court records, the animal suffered serious mistreatment, prompting intervention by animal welfare officials. The owner was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty. During court proceedings, the accused pleaded guilty to the offense.

The court handed down a six-month custodial sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of animal abuse and reaffirming the importance of protecting animals from harm. The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust welcomed the ruling, describing it as a strong message that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated under the law.

This is a year of memory that we can never forget, this is the year we can say the animal Abusers can learn from Jambarr, this is the year of the advocates to celebrate that our efforts are now realized, this is the year of Joy and pleasure for the animals, because it's for the first time to see a person found guilty for abusing Animals in the Gambia and sentence for six months.

Animals are suffering in the Gambia but Donkeys are the most vulnerable. THANK YOU THE GAMBIA HORSE AND DONKEY TRUST, THANK YOU BAKOTEH POLICE OFFICERS THANK YOU KMC MUNICIPALITY AND ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION FERETANITY........

Animal Welfare Advocates Association -The Gambia
Condemning the Killing of Wildlife During Celebrations and Ceremonies

The Animal Welfare Association expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the recent killing of a crocodile and other wildlife in a village to welcome the President. Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Across many rural communities, animals continue to be slaughtered to honour leaders a practice that brings serious harm to our wildlife and contradicts the principles of compassion, conservation, and responsible citizenship.
No visit, ceremony, or celebration should ever justify killing wildlife.
Crocodiles, antelopes, monkeys, birds, and other species are already under pressure from habitat loss, climate change, and illegal hunting. Every unnecessary killing pushes them closer to extinction and weakens our ecological balance. Our wildlife is a national heritage—not a sacrifice for public display.
We call on:
• The Government to urgently discourage communities from killing animals during official visits.
• Community leaders to educate their people on the importance of protecting wildlife.
• The public to reject and report all forms of ceremonial wildlife killing.
• Hunters’ Associations to abandon outdated, harmful practices.
These traditions must stop immediately.
There is no cultural honour in cruelty, and no celebration requires the loss of innocent animal life.
The Animal Welfare Advocates Association remains committed to protecting wildlife and promoting a compassionate, environmentally responsible Gambia.

Let us honour our leaders with wisdom not with the destruction of the animals that make our country unique.
