Civic Education Camps Successfully Concluded in URR and LRR

Yesterday, Global Platform The Gambia and its partners successfully concluded simultaneous Civic Education Camps in the Upper River Region (URR) and Lower River Region (LRR), bringing together young people from different districts for three days of learning, dialogue, and empowerment.

The camps engaged participants on key topics including good governance, human rights and responsibilities, and youth and women political participation, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to actively participate in civic processes and community development.

These camps were implemented under the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund-supported Youth Promotion Initiative (YPI), through ActionAid International The Gambia, as part of the project “Empowering Marginalized Young People for Inclusion in Civic Spaces and Local Infrastructures for Peace.”

Today we convened a Youth–Area Council Assembly in Lower River Region, bringing together District Youth Committees, the Regional Youth Committee, migrant returnees, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to engage with the Mansakonko Area Council, led by Chairman Landing B. Sanneh and his Councillors.

The engagement produced encouraging outcomes, with the Council reaffirming its 5% allocation for youth initiatives and committing to strengthen coordination with the Regional Youth Committee and the Regional Youth & Sports Office.

Additional commitments include:
1. Expanding educational support and scholarships for young people
2. Appointing professional management for the Council Lodge to increase revenue for youth initiatives
3. Prioritizing PWDs and migrant returnees in development efforts
4. Assigning two dedicated staff to the Julafarr Mini Stadium to strengthen youth activities

This engagement forms part of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund-supported project “Empowering Marginalized Young People for Inclusion in Civic Spaces and Local Infrastructures for Peace,” implemented through ActionAid International The Gambia.

Yesterday, Global Platform The Gambia, together with Activista The Gambia and Safe Home for Migrants Association, facilitated a high-level advocacy engagement with the Basse Area Council to push for the allocation of at least 5% from the 60% council revenue meant for community development to support youth initiatives.

The Council welcomed the campaign and reaffirmed that youth issues must remain a priority, especially as young people make up over 60% of the population.

The meeting resulted in several key commitments:

• The Council agreed to allocate beyond the requested 5% to youth initiatives.
• A commitment was made to swear in the youth representative within three weeks.
• Youth representatives were encouraged to attend council sittings.
• A new bye-law will integrate youth representatives into Ward Development Committees in consultation with District Youth Committees.
• Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) will also be included in local development structures.

This engagement marks a significant step toward inclusive governance and stronger youth participation in decision-making under the YPI project funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding fund through ActionAid International The Gambia.

Today, our advocacy engagements took us to Wuli West District and Sandu District in the Upper River Region, where we met with Chiefs, Councillors, and Village Development Committees to advance conversations on youth and women inclusion in local infrastructures and decision-making spaces.

The discussions were highly encouraging, with local authorities making strong commitments to ensure meaningful inclusion. Notably, the Chief of Sandu District pledged to appoint both a woman and a young person to his district tribunal, signaling a concrete step toward inclusive and representative local governance.

These engagements form part of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund–supported project “Empowering Marginalized Young People for Inclusion in Civic Spaces and Local Infrastructures for Peace,” implemented through ActionAid International The Gambia by Global Platform The Gambia, Activista The Gambia, and Safe Home for Migrants Association - SaHMA.

The meetings have been highly productive, with stakeholders expressing strong commitment to promoting inclusive participation and ensuring that youth and women have a voice in decision-making processes that shape their communities.

This intervention is part of the United NationsPeacebuilding Fund-supported project titled “Empowering Marginalized Young People for Inclusion in Civic Spaces and Local Infrastructures for Peace,” implemented through ActionAid International The Gambia

Together, we continue to champion inclusive leadership, sustainable peace, and community-driven development.

Yesterday, we successfully concluded three days of intensive capacity building and the official launch of the Young Rural and Urban Women’s Forum.

Participants were trained extensively on power, leadership, advocacy, and collective organizing and this is only the beginning. The Forum will continue to receive sustained capacity building and mentorship to equip young women with the tools to confront unjust power, challenge injustice, and resist all forms of abuse, especially against women.

As a major milestone, the Forum democratically elected an Interim Executive Committee to steer the movement’s activities over the next six months.

The Young Rural and Urban Women’s Forum is a movement branch under Global Platform The Gambia, bringing together young women from across the country to organize, lead, and claim their rightful space in society.
