Today, as part of the implementation of our Lahido Project supported by UNFPA through Child Fund, we have convened a successful inter-community dialogue on FGM and child marriage at Sotuma Sere in Jimara district, URR.
40 participants from Sotuma Sere and Sotuma Samba Koi took part in the knowledge exchange, sharing best practices and encouraging community-led solutions.
Addressing participants, our Executive Director, Mr.Nfamara Jawneh urged communities in the region to consider abandoning these harmful traditional practices.
He reiterated our organization’s commitment in working closely with communities in the region towards ending all forms of gender based violence.
“FGM is a human rights violation that is also inimical to the health and wellbeing of women and girls,” he said.

We continues to monitor the unlawful detention of GALA members at the Kairaba and Kotu police stations. We are deeply concerned about the conditions of some of them particularly those kept at Kotu Police Station.
The authorities are being reminded that the continued incarceration of this youth represents a blatant disregard for the law and a gross violation of their fundamental rights.

We wish to state categorically that the manner of arrest, the conditions of detention, and the treatment of these youths amount to torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. These actions constitute a grave violation of international human rights law as well as the Prohibition and Prevention of Torture Act 2023.
These young people are not terrorists, armed robbers, or insurgents to justify such excessive restrictions and intimidation.
Beakanyang strongly condemns their continued detention and demands their immediate and unconditional release.
We call on the international community to pay close attention to human rights violations happening in The Gambia.

Peaceful assembly is a constitutional right clearly stipulated in Section 25 of the 1997 constitution.
The use of the Youth Monument does not require a police permit.
We therefore remind the government of its obligations to protect, promote and defend human rights.
Beakanyang stands in total solidarity with the detained youth.
