We extend our sincere appreciation to the Honourable Minister for receiving the Workers’ Day resolutions submitted by the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG).

The engagement reflects a constructive step toward strengthening dialogue between government and workers’ representatives. These resolutions capture the collective voice and aspirations of Gambian workers, and we are encouraged by the Minister’s openness and commitment to review them.

We look forward to the Government’s careful consideration of the proposals and to meaningful actions that will advance fair labour standards, improve working conditions, and enhance the welfare of all workers in The Gambia.

As we approach May Day 2026, we remain hopeful that this engagement will translate into tangible progress for the country’s workforce.

The General Transport Union (GTU) proudly welcomes and applauds the successful completion and inauguration of the 91 km Kiang West Road Project, officially commissioned on 25 April 2026.

For years, Kiang West was among the most difficult areas to access, especially during the rainy season, when poor road conditions created serious challenges for both drivers and residents. Today, that reality has changed. The newly constructed road has greatly improved accessibility, ensuring smoother, safer, and more reliable transportation.

This milestone achievement will significantly reduce travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and extend the lifespan of vehicles. For road transport workers, this development is not just important—it is transformative, directly enhancing daily operations and livelihoods.

On behalf of the General Transport Union, we extend our sincere appreciation to His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the National Roads Authority, and G*i Construction Company for their commitment and dedication in delivering this vital project.

Road infrastructure remains the backbone of an efficient transport system. As transport workers, we strongly encourage the Government to sustain and expand investments in connectivity across the country, as it is essential for national development, economic growth, and the improvement of lives and livelihoods.

Omar Ceesay, Our President, Takes Part in Historic Labour Milestone

History was made today at Paradise Suites Hotel as the Federation of Labour Unions of The Gambia (FLUG) was officially born—marking a powerful new chapter for workers across the country.

Among the key figures present was Omar Ceesay, our President, who took part in the landmark First Congress, lending his voice and support to this unified labour movement. His participation reflects the commitment of the General Transport Union to strengthening solidarity and advancing the rights and welfare of workers nationwide.

The Congress brought together an unprecedented coalition of unions—from teachers and journalists to transport workers, farmers, and the informal sector—alongside civil society actors and international partners. The message was clear: Gambian workers are united, organised, and ready.

Delegates also adopted the FLUG Constitution, laying the foundation for a coordinated and impactful federation that will champion fair wages, decent working conditions, and social justice.

With strong government representation and growing support from partners, FLUG now stands as a collective force for change—driven by unity and purpose.

Today was not just a gathering—it was history in the making.

✊🏽 One Federation. One Voice. One Power.

The General Transport Union (GTU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure and other key stakeholders, wishes to inform the general public that a temporary adjustment in transport fares has been agreed upon for the Greater Banjul Area and the West Coast Region.

This decision follows a series of consultations aimed at addressing ongoing challenges within the transport sector, particularly the impact of rising fuel costs on operations.

The Union further assures both transport operators and the public that these engagements will, in due course, be extended to rural areas to ensure a balanced and inclusive nationwide approach.

The GTU remains fully committed to working closely with the Government and all relevant stakeholders to promote a sustainable, reliable, and efficient transport system during this challenging period.

It also reaffirms its commitment to serving road transport operators and the country at large.

The General Transport Union (GTU) is pleased to inform its members and the general public that its President, Mr. Omar Ceesay, is currently in Ghana on an important study tour aimed at strengthening The Gambia’s transport sector.

The visit is organised by the Ministry of Transport Works and Infrastructure, Gambia-MOTWI, with support from the World Bank-funded Gambia Infrastructure Project. It brings together key stakeholders, including representatives from the road transport sector, as part of ongoing efforts to support the operationalisation of the Road Transport Bill.

During the tour, the delegation will engage with counterparts in Ghana to gain practical insights, share experiences, and learn from best practices in transport management and regulation. The engagement is also expected to foster stronger partnerships that will support reforms and modernization within The Gambia’s transport system.

The GTU believes this initiative comes at a critical time, as the country works towards building a more efficient, reliable, and well-regulated transport sector. The knowledge and experience gained from this visit will play a key role in shaping ongoing reforms and strengthening the union’s contribution to national development.

The Union extends its best wishes to Mr. Ceesay and the entire delegation for a successful and productive visit and looks forward to the positive outcomes that will benefit both its members and the wider transport industry.
