Alliance of Victim Led Organizations - The Gambia Supporting victims. Advancing TRRC implementation.

30/08/2026

Since 2017, the Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations has supported the families of the disappeared through psychosocial, medical, and educational care.

Progress has been made a Reparations Commission, a Victims’ Fund, and a Special Prosecutor office to try Jammeh-era crimes. But reparations funding remains a challenge, remains are still unidentified, and enforced disappearance still isn’t a crime under Gambian law.

We call on government to invest in forensic recovery, and deliver reparations without delay.

Never again. 🕊️

Today, AVLO joins the world in commemorating the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

We remember those who disappeared, stand with the families still waiting for truth and answers, and reaffirm our call for justice, accountability, and the full implementation of the TRRC recommendations.

Victims first. Actions now.
🕊️ Disappeared, but never forgotten.

🕯️ Victims First. Actions Now.

On the 30th of August, 2026, we will join the world in commemorating the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

For families in The Gambia and around the world, enforced disappearance leaves behind more than unanswered questions, it leaves lives suspended in uncertainty and a search for truth, justice, and accountability.

As we mark 20 years of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), we reaffirm a simple commitment: victims must come first, and action cannot wait.

Let us remember. Let us stand with families. Let us demand truth, justice, and accountability.
NEVER AGAIN.

Young Gambians may have experienced The Gambia’s transitional justice journey differently, but the aspiration is shared: truth, justice, accountability, and “Never Again.”

Founded after the fall of Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship by Victims and family members of victims in 2017, the Gambia Center For Victims Of Human Rights Violations (Victims’ Centre), part of AVLO, was established through the struggle of survivors demanding truth, justice and reparations, as well as to ensure their voices are heard. It stands as a safe space for victims, documenting abuses and advocating for truth, justice, reparations, and democratic reform while providing direct support to those most affected.

Over the years, the Victims’ Centre has spearheaded nationwide “Musical Caravan” outreach tours, trained lawmakers and civil society on transitional justice, and translated key policies into local languages for inclusivity. Beyond advocacy, it delivers tangible assistance through educational support, medical care, and psychosocial services, helping survivors rebuild their lives while keeping accountability and healing at the heart of The Gambia’s journey.

In 2025, AVLO received a prestigious award from Center for Justice and Accountability in recognition of its dedicated work in The Gambia, particularly its support to victims of human rights violations and its contribution to the post-TRRC process. Through its engagement with victims and communities, AVLO has continued to promote truth, justice, healing, reparations and accountability, ensuring that victims’ voices remain central to The Gambia’s transitional justice journey.

This recognition is not only an honour for AVLO, but also a recognition of the courage, resilience and strength of victims, whose experiences and pursuit of justice continue to shape The Gambia’s journey towards healing and accountability. AVLO remains committed to standing with victims and advancing a more just and accountable Gambia.

Thank you to CJA for the award.✊🏿

Today, we join the world in celebrating International Youth Day 2026, themed "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations." 🇬🇲

Every young Gambian carries a different story, shaped by different homes, regions, and experiences of the past. But the aspiration is the same: truth, accountability, and a Gambia where "Never Again" is a promise kept, not just a phrase remembered.

At AVLO, we recognize young people as partners, not bystanders, in the journey toward justice, healing, and reconciliation. Their voices, energy, and demand for accountability are shaping what comes next for our country.

To every young Gambian doing this work, in ways big and small: we see you, and we stand with you.

Happy International Youth Day! 🤝🏾✊🏾

Fantanka, founded by Ms. Mariama Jobarteh, is a women-led organisation in The Gambia working to address sexual and gender-based violence, promote mental health and psychosocial support, sexual and reproductive health, transitional justice, and human rights through a survivor-centered approach.

Using music, creative audiovisual productions, and other non-formal approaches, Fantanka makes important messages accessible to harder-to-reach audiences, especially young people. From the child-friendly version of the TRRC Final Report and the TRRC Gender-Based Violence Report docudrama to the April 10th and 11th commemorative film, school debates, safe spaces for adolescents, child-friendly communication materials, and out-of-school comprehensive sexuality education, the organisation continues to connect healing with justice while empowering women, girls, and youth.
