-To facilitate free movement for international motorists within the community.

-To enable international carriers to comply with motor vehicles insurance requirements in force in the community member countries.

-To enhance the development of trade and tourism exchanges among states.

-To establish a common scheme for the settlement of claims arising from free movement of goods and persons within ECOWAS.

OUTSIDE THE GAMBIA?

One does not need to travel to another ECOWAS country before being exposed to the ECOWAS Brown Card risk. It 1s quite clear that foreign motorists are travelling in and out of the Gambia and if any motorist is involved in an accident caused by a foreign ECOWAS motorist then it is the obligation of ECOWAS BROWN CARD National Bureau to process your claim and make sure you are adequately compensated.

29th May, 1982 (Cotonou,Benin) the ECOWAS Heads of states and Governments signed a protocol to establish The Ecowas Brown Card Insurance Scheme. This scheme was one of the very first protocols to be implemented by ECOWAS since its birth as Regional body in 1979. The scheme was derived from the protocol on free movement of goods and persons across our territorial boundaries in the West African Sub-region.
