Last week, the Parliamentary Reporters Association of Gambia (PRAG), with support from the African Parliamentary Press Network, successfully conducted a two-day capacity-building training for its members. The training focused on critical topics such as parliamentary transparency, oversight, budgeting, and constitutional building. Participants engaged in interactive sessions that enhanced their understanding of legislative processes and the importance of accountability in governance.

The training not only equipped members with essential skills but also fostered collaboration and networking among journalists, enabling them to better report on parliamentary activities and contribute to informed public discourse. Moving forward, PRAG aims to implement regular training sessions to further strengthen the capacity of its members and promote greater transparency in governance.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the African Parliamentary Press Network for their valuable support, and we look forward to strengthening this partnership with the network.

It's a wrap-up of our two-day capacity-building training on audit reporting support, led by the National Audit Office.

Today, participants engaged in exercises discussing the challenges that media face in reviewing audit reports. They also proposed suggestions, which will be included in the NAO media handbook—an initiative to be introduced by the Audit Office for the first time.

Once, we extend our appreciation to the National Audit Office for supporting such initiative.

The Parliamentary Reporters Association of The Gambia (PRAG) has commenced a two-day training on audit reporting today, 20th December 2023 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre in Bijilo.

The training, supported by the National Audit Office, will guide participants through key audit terms, the audit process/cycle, public sector audit types, as well as practical exercises on audit reporting. One of the main aim is to develop a media reporting handbook in the long term which will be useful for future media practitioners.

During the opening remarks, the Auditor General, Modou Ceesay, emphasized that this engagement will foster more interactions with the media regarding basic audit reporting, ultimately increasing the visibility of the NAOs audit reports.

He added, “we understand that the media sometimes doesn’t comprehend our audit reports well. This is why we organized this training to bridge the gap, thus increasing awareness and benefiting the citizenry. We hope this will contribute to building the capacity of the media on the report of the Audit.”

We extend our sincere appreciation to the National Audit Office for providing this opportunity to our members, and we look forward to collaborating on opportunities in the future.

Today, we have successfully completed a one-day training session for our members on parliamentary reporting.

We engaged in discussions covering key topics, including the legislative process and parliamentary procedures, the pivotal role of the parliamentary press corps in promoting democracy, and strategies to enhance relations between parliament and the media.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to PNAfrica, the African Parliamentary Press Network (APPN), and the National Assembly for their invaluable support in making this initiative possible.

Parliaments play a critical role in advancing democracy, and it is imperative that members of the media are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to professionally fulfill their roles as watchdogs and conduits for the public to access reliable parliamentary information.
