I have looked at life from both sides now, the ups and downs, and still somehow, it’s this reality I recall. I may just have found out:
Gender equity is our best bet for real progress.
For years, I heard people talk about gender equality as the gold standard. “Give everyone the same opportunities,” they’d say.
Sounds good, right?
But life has taught me something different: sameness doesn’t always translate to fairness.
Equality assumes everyone starts from the same line; however, equity recognises that some people begin the race carrying weights they didn’t choose.
And that’s why I stand firmly on the side of gender equity.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Equality treats everyone the same, while equity gives everyone what they actually need. Girls in some communities miss school because of financial constraints, early marriage, or lack of sanitary products. Boys may face pressure to be the sole breadwinners at an early age. Giving both genders “the same opportunity” without addressing these barriers does nothing, but with equity, we tend to fix the barriers first.
2. Equity produces measurable results. According to the World Economic Forum, at the current pace, it will take over 130 years to achieve global gender equality. Why? Because we’ve tried sameness and sameness doesn't work, there has never been a one-size-fits-all answer. Equity-led policies, maternal protections, economic inclusion programs, and flexible workplaces are what actually shift the numbers.
3. Equality ignores context, but equity deals with reality. You cannot apply the same rules to people who have had different lived experiences. While equality says, “Everyone can climb the same tree.” Equity says, “But not everyone was given climbing shoes.” It's that simple.
4. Equity builds stronger societies. Data shows that countries that invest in equity, like improving access to education for girls or supporting women-owned businesses, see higher GDP growth, reduced poverty, and better health outcomes across the board, because when everyone has what they need to thrive, the whole community wins.
