On 17 February 2026, hosted by Violeta Insa, Charge d'Affairs, and through the engagement of Prof. Adriana Kaplan, founder of Wassu Gambia Kafo, our organisation was invited to join a high‑level meeting with the Spanish Ambassador and a representative of AECID in Dakar together with other NGOs such as the Spanish Red Cross, with the aim to strengthen cooperation and partnership across Africa. Wassu was represented by Hamadi Sowe, Research and Training Coordinator as well as Fatou Nyang, Community Trainer.
Key discussions highlighted priorities including education & scholarships for youth empowerment, health & humanitarian services to improve community well‑being, migration support & social welfare, rural development & gender equality, and renewable energy initiatives for sustainable growth.
The meeting also addressed the current issues around enforcement of laws on FGM in The Gambia, underscoring the urgent need for effective implementation to protect women and girls.
In parallel, emphasis was placed on championing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for adolescent girls both in and out of school, as a cornerstone for empowerment, safety, and equality.Through this dialogue, and Prof. Kaplan’s leadership, Wassu Gambia Kafo reaffirmed its commitment to advancing these priorities in collaboration with NGOs and stakeholders, ensuring that every girl grows up safe, healthy, and empowered. 🌍✨
