Statement by the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ-4)

The Movement for Social Justice (MSJ-4) strongly condemns the recent action by the Ministry of Information of sharing a press release of the ruling political party on its official page. This conduct represents a troubling misuse of public office and state communication platforms for partisan political purposes, contrary to the fundamental principles of the rule of law and democratic governance in The Gambia.

Public institutions exist to serve all citizens equally, regardless of political affiliation. When state resources and official platforms are used to advance the interests of a particular party, it erodes the neutrality expected of public offices and undermines public confidence in government institutions. Such actions blur the necessary separation between the state and political parties, creating an uneven playing field and weakening democratic accountability.

MSJ-4 emphasizes that adherence to the rule of law requires strict respect for the principle that public office must never be used for partisan benefit or personal political gain. Government ministries, especially those responsible for public communication, have a heightened duty to maintain impartiality, professionalism, and fairness in the dissemination of information.

We therefore call on the Ministry of Information to:
1. Immediately remove the partisan content from its official platforms.
2. Issue a public clarification reaffirming its commitment to political neutrality.
3. Establish and enforce clear guidelines to prevent the use of public communication channels for party-political messaging in the future.

Upholding the integrity of public institutions is essential to maintaining citizens’ trust, protecting democratic norms, and ensuring that all political actors operate within a fair and lawful framework. MSJ-4 reiterates that safeguarding the separation between state functions and party politics is indispensable to preserving the credibility and legitimacy of public office.
