Youth + Environment = Real Change ๐ŸŒฑ

Today was more than a meeting it was a conversation rooted in hope, responsibility, and action. We sat down with the National Environment Agency (NEA) team, including Deputy Executive Director Njaga Touray and ED Dawda Badji, to talk about what really matters: the environment and the youth who will protect it.

โœจ Here's what stood out:
NEA understands that youth are not just participants, they are leaders in environmental action.
Their slogan? โ€œCatch them young.โ€ Because when we empower young people early, we build a generation that cares.

The agency is ready to move beyond discussions, they want action on the ground.

A vibrant MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) is on the table to formalize our collaboration and make impact measurable.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Njaga Touray, NEA Deputy Executive Director said it clearly:
โ€œWe understand the role of youth when it comes to the environment, and you people represent that. Our networks in collaboration will be our advantage to embolden our activities.โ€

NEA Executive Director Dawda Badji reminded us:
โ€œIn environmental management, we have a slogan: catch them young.

What we want to see is action on the ground.โ€
And yes, there was honesty too. One bold truth shared: โ€œOne of the biggest polluters in this country are the youth.โ€ Not to shame, but to wake us up. Because if we're part of the problem, we must also be the solution.

๐Ÿ™Œ Modou Lamin Gassama, Country Coordinator for the Youth Climate Council (YCC) The Gambia, took the time to explain what YCC is all about, and why this partnership with NEA is a game-changer.

๐Ÿ’ฌ This isn't just about Collaboration.
It's about building trust.
It's about turning energy into action.

It's about youth and institutions working side by side for a cleaner, greener Gambia.

To every young person reading this:
Your voice matters. Your actions matter.
Let's catch this moment and catch them young.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Cities have moved from the margins to the centre of national climate planning: 80% of NDC 3.0 submissions now include well-developed urban content, up from just 49% in NDC 2.0.

This unprecedented shift reflects a fundamental recognition that while climate decisions are made nationally, delivery happens in cities. The data shows:

๐Ÿ“ Implementation focus: 73% of NDCs 3.0 make cities a priority through specific enabling mechanisms

๐Ÿ“ Housing emerges as climate priority: 45% of NDCs now include housing and informal settlements, highlighting the interconnection between housing and climate crises

๐Ÿ“ Adaptation acceleration: 87% of NDCs outline cities' role in adaptation (up from 54%), with infrastructure, water management, and ecosystems as key sectors

๐Ÿ“ Mitigation foundation: 83% include urban mitigation, with transport, energy, and waste management as primary targets

Regional highlights show Africa leading with 94% urban content inclusion, while rapidly urbanizing middle-income countries drive the most ambitious mitigation responses.

The report also identifies critical gaps: only 19% of NDCs include dedicated urban climate finance mechanisms, and while multilevel governance frameworks are growing faster than institutional capacity to implement them.

Strengthening urban content in national climate plans is about delivering practical, inclusive climate action that improves people's lives while building more resilient, sustainable futures.

Earth is our one and only home. Wherever we live, protecting the planet is a shared responsibility.

Mother Earth has given us everything, yet we have repaid her with reckless destruction, said UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres on Wednesdayโ€™s International Mother Earth Day.

โ€œWe must break our dependence on fossil fuels, protect and restore nature at scale, and deliver climate justice for those who did least to cause this crisis yet suffer the most,โ€ he urged, calling on governments and businesses to step up ambition on climate action.

From reducing food waste to saving energy and buying local, we can all take action and make every day Earth Day.
