Training Of Community Journalists And Youth Advocates As RTI Champions In North East Region

Enhancing Transparency And Accountability in Governance!!!

Do you need information from public institutions? Do you want to use the RTI Act but don't know where to start?
The newly trained RTI Champions are here to assist you!

Access to information is a fundamental human right and key to transparent and accountable governance. The RTI Act empowers citizens to request information from public institutions to ensure greater citizens engagement in government affairs or activities.

The Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) under the Empowerment For Life Program Ghana organized a training session for community journalists and youth advocates in the North East Region on March 26th, 2026, to champion the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The event, held in Nalerigu, brought together participants from the West Mamprusi Municipal Youth Hub, East Mamprusi Youth Hub, and Yunyoo Youth Hub - and we were privileged to be part of this important event as members of the West Mamprusi Youth Hub! 😊

The training was eye-opening and we're now equipped to help bridge information gaps in our communities. As RTI Champions, we will help citizens access info, promote transparency, and hold public institutions accountable - making governance more inclusive.

With the RTI Act, citizens can exercise their right to access information and we're grateful to the Empowerment For Life Ghana for their continued efforts in empowering young people to lead positive change. The GDCA under the Empowerment For Life Programme aims to enhance citizens' engagement in governance through this initiative.

So just in case you want to use the RTI Act😁 but have difficulties, you can reach out to us for assistance!🔥🔥🔥😊🙏

West Mamprusi Municipal Youth Hub Engages Youth and Stakeholders On Drug Abuse

The North East Regional Youth Network, in partnership with African Students For Interfaith Tolerance (ASFIT) and supported by the Empowerment For Life Program Ghana, hosted a two-day engagement to tackle drug abuse among young people in the West Mamprusi Municipality. As noted by the Municipal Immigration Commander, "With discipline, community readiness and support, we can address the issue of drug abuse in West Mamprusi Municipality."

The event took place on March 18-19, 2026, at the GES Conference Hall in Walewale. Young people, including youth advocates, community journalists under the Empowerment For Life Program, other youth groups, and stakeholders, came together to discuss the impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities. They identified key causes of drug abuse, including poor parental guidance, poverty, peer influence, and weak regulatory frameworks.

The groups focused on four areas: poor parenting systems, regulation of drug abuse, supporting youth already addicted, and preventing youth from initiating drug use. As emphasized by the Municipal Police Commander, "Law enforcement agencies are doing their best, but community members must prove their willingness in addressing the issue of drug abuse in more practical ways."

Reflecting on the youth network's efforts, the President, Mr. Issah Toaha Shamsoo, highlighted the network's commitment to addressing drug abuse among young people in the Municipality. He noted, "Despite the fact that young people are engaged in drug abuse, young people are also engaged actively in co-creating solutions to address this issue, and we need to appreciate the few young people with these positive change mindsets for their efforts."

The engagement highlighted the importance of collaboration between young people, community leaders, and stakeholders in addressing the complex issue of drug abuse. By working together, it is hoped that effective strategies can be implemented to prevent drug abuse, support affected youth, and create a safer, healthier community for all.

Find out how 😊👇

On October 11th, 2025, the Walewale Astro Turf played host to a landmark event that promised to shape the future of the young people of the West Mamprusi Municipality. The Football For Peace Ghana Youth Programme was officially launched, bringing together over 100 young people aged 14-16 from diverse backgrounds. This initiative is implemented by African Students For Interfaith Tolerance (ASFIT) in partnership with Football For Peace (FFP), and CDD Ghana, aims to harness the power of football to promote peace, unity, and community development.

The program's objectives are focused on building resilience, promoting media literacy, and strengthening community cohesion. Breast cancer does not discriminate based on gender—Sumani Sahidl Kawuneini (Youth Advocate)

West Mamprusi Community Journalists in collaboration with the West Mamprusi Youth Advocates held a radio discussion on the 1st of October to mark the beginning of the National Breasts Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) that comes off in October every year.
The discussion was mainly about the history of this important world wide campaign against breast cancer.

Below is a brief history behind "pink October" as a breast cancer awareness month.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month was established in October 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries, with support from survivor Betty Ford, to promote mammograms and early detection of the disease. Madam Betty Ford was the wife of the 38th president of the United States of America from 1974 to 1977 The campaign advanced from a week-long initiative into the full month of "Pink October" by the UICC, which is now a global effort using the pink ribbon symbol to raise awareness and fund research for a cure.

ORIGIN AND GOALS
1985:
The American Cancer Society partnered with the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries to launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM).

Betty Ford:
Former First Lady Betty Ford, a breast cancer survivor, helped kick off the campaign, bringing increased attention to the disease.

Focus on Mammograms:
The primary goal was to promote mammograms as the most effective tool for early detection of breast cancer.

"Pink October":
Over time, the initiative expanded to the entire month of October, a period now known globally as "Pink October," dedicated to raising awareness and promoting prevention and early diagnosis.

The Pink Ribbon Symbol
Symbol of Hope:
The pink ribbon, introduced in the early 1990s, became a widely recognized symbol of breast cancer awareness.

Meaning:
It symbolizes bravery in the face of the disease, optimism for the future, and the collective efforts of individuals and organizations to find a cure, according to PACE Hospitals.

A frequently asked question
Can males also develop or be afflicted with breast cancer?

Yes!
Breast cancer in males develops in their breasts. Males account for less than 1% of new breast cancers with about 20,000 new cases being diagnosed worldwide every year. Its incidence rates in males versus females are, respectively, 0.4 and 66.7 per 100,000 person-years.

Let's take note.
Let's join hands in the fight against breast by creating awareness and educating each other about this disease while breaking the taboos surrounding it.

As the campaign has begun, most of our programs in this month shall be focused on breast cancer awareness.
