All of the pretty colours of shea nuts and shea butter! It is actually a very complicated process with many steps. What are the steps you ask? ?

1.Gathering Shea Nuts
Mature shea fruits are collected from under the shea tree. The pulp is removed to get the nuts.
2.Boiling the Nuts
The nuts are boiled to prevent germination and spoilage.
3.Drying
After boiling, the nuts are dried under the sun for several days.
4.Cracking and Shelling
The hard shells are cracked to remove the kernels inside.
5.Roasting
The kernels are roasted carefully to develop oil and flavor.
6.Grinding
The roasted kernels are ground into a thick brown paste.
7.Mixing and Kneading
Water is added and the paste is mixed continuously until the oil separates.
8.Boiling the Extracted Oil.
The oil is boiled to remove impurities and excess water.
9.Cooling and Solidifying.
The clean oil cools and becomes solid, forming creamy shea butter.
10. Packaging and Storage

The finished shea butter is packaged for cooking oil, for moisturizing the skin and hair, and to create soap and lotion / skin cream production.

We hosted a support team from our long term development partners at the Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo last week - we had Canadian reps from the finance and IT departments on hand to experience first hand our very hot March temperatures and to witness the ecotourism business and the shea butter business.

Their visit started of course with a courtesy call to the Wechiau Paramount Chief. They toured the lodge and experienced a Lobi compound tour. They even saw former WICZ staffer (and Sanctuary Advisor) Donna Sheppard’s old home and mango tree!

Thank you for your visit. We look forward to better times ahead with the partnership!!

May all the joys of life be showered on you. We wish you a very happy Eid Mubarak !!

Flashback Friday! Remembering the good old days of the WLI - the Wechiau Lighting Initiative - an initiative with Nature Conservation Research Centre (NCRC), Calgary Zoo, Canadian Hydro, and the Light Up The World Foundation.
Across 5 years, approximately 500 solar lighting systems (pole lights for homesteads and box lights for traveling clients) were provided to residents of the WCHS Development Zone back in 2005 to 2009. Many of those lights helped the youth to do their homework in the evenings. Keeping them dust-free by washing the panels was essential to keeping the lights on night after night.
Thanks to this pioneering team for showing us that 'light is life'!
