On Human Rights Day — Environmental Rights Are Our Everyday Essentials

Today, on Human Rights Day, celebrated under the 2025 theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials”, HATOF Foundation reaffirms that a clean, healthy, sustainable environment is not a luxury, but a core human right.

As we mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), we recognise that access to clean air, safe water, fertile soil and healthy ecosystems are foundational to dignity, health, livelihood, and justice. These are not abstract ideals, however, they are what make everyday life possible.

✅ What this means for HATOF and our commitment

We stand for environmental justice & equity, ensuring that vulnerable and marginalised communities — often bearing the brunt of pollution, environmental degradation and climate impacts, have a voice, protection, and access to environmental goods.

We maintain that environmental protection must be treated as a fundamental human right, intertwined with social justice, health, livelihoods, and well-being.

We commit to advancing sustainable development and ecological stewardship as concrete policy and community-driven action because human rights are not optional, they are essential.

🤝 Our call to action
On this Human Rights Day, we call on governments, businesses, communities and individuals to embed environmental rights into all policies, plans and daily decisions. Protecting nature is protecting people, and safeguarding people’s dignity and future.

At HATOF, we pledge to persist together with our partners and communities until a healthy environment becomes the everyday reality for all.

🚀 HATOF Foundation Leads High-Level Climate–Health Dialogue at COP30 Brazil, Belém 🇬🇭🇧🇷

We are delighted to share that HATOF Foundation, in partnership with the Government of Ghana, the Regional Institute for Population Studies (University of Ghana), and the global SOSCHI Project UK project team, successfully hosted a high-level official side event at COP30 on "Leveraging support for climate-health interactions for policy decisions and implementing Ghana's NDC"

The session brought together senior government leaders, international experts, researchers, and civil society actors to present groundbreaking evidence on how climate change is reshaping health risks across Ghana—and the urgent need for stronger, integrated climate-health data systems to guide policy and investment.

👥 Distinguished attendees included:

Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, CEO, Environmental Protection Agency

Dr. Hugh C.A. Brown, CEO, Ghana Forestry Commission

Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairman, NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING COMMISSION (NDPC)-GHANA

Their presence reaffirmed Ghana’s strong political commitment to advancing climate-health resilience.

💡 Event Highlights
The discussions showcased:

Evidence from the SOSCHI project on the impact of climate variables on meningitis, malaria, child undernutrition, and health system vulnerability.

The need for harmonized statistical systems to strengthen national climate-health reporting.

How climate change is already affecting health service delivery—from flood disruptions to heat-related fatigue among health workers.

HATOF Foundation also highlighted its flagship projects, including:
🌱 ACTUATE Waste-to-Energy Project (with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana & Lancaster University)
🌿 4,000+ hectares of landscape restoration across Ghana
💼 Green Climate Fund CSO Readiness Programme, strengthening climate finance capacity across 10 CSO networks

📌 Key Outcome:
The evidence presented strongly supports the Belém Health Action Plan (BHAP), demonstrating the need for climate-informed early warning systems, standardized climate-health indicators, and resilient health infrastructure.

We extend our appreciation to all partners, experts, and participants whose insights made this session deeply impactful. Together, we move closer to a future where climate action reinforces health systems—and health systems strengthen climate resilience. 🌍💚

1. Practical knowledge on biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration.

2. Skills development in environmental leadership for governance, advocacy, policy engagement, and project implementation.

3. Opportunities to connect with leading conservation experts, youth networks, and environmental organizations.

Cohort 1 marks the beginning of this movement, featuring interactive capacity building sessions, mentorship opportunities, and action-oriented community engagements. This initiative further cements HATOF's commitment to engaging the youth for environmental stewardship, ensuring the next generation is ready to lead biodiversity action locally and globally.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!

Participation is completely free, and you will receive an official certificate for a one-time fee of GHS 50.00 upon completion.

Today is about the youth! hashtag
Localizing the SDGs is more than a policy phrase. It means adapting global goals to local realities, aligning with community needs while staying consistent with national and international commitments.
Young people are catalysts for innovation and resilience, when empowered in the process of localizing the SDGs!
With this, the 2025 International Youth Day, ( ) theme urges us to see the SDGs as milestones, not finish lines.
Aligned with the World Programme of Action for Youth ( ), this theme renews our commitment to youth agency, decision-making, and sustainable development.
By engaging youth as key partners, we can ensure translation of the SDGs and beyond into lasting locally-driven change for today, 2030, and generations to come.

🌱 Today is ! 🌍

Under the theme “Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities,” we reaffirm our commitment to rehabilitating degraded ecosystems critical for food security, livelihoods, climate resilience, and biodiversity.

💡 Did you know?
Every $1 invested in land restoration yields between $7–$30 in economic return—fueling green jobs and sustainable growth. Yet need is urgent: 1 million km² of productive land lost each year; 1.5 billion hectares must be restored by 2030 to halt land degradation.

✨ Let’s take action today — whether planting trees, supporting NGOs, or championing sustainable land policies. Together, we can revive the land and unleash a trillion-dollar land restoration economy.

🔑 Join the movement:
- Advocate for nature-based restoration
- Fund drought resilience and sustainable land use
- Engage communities in land stewardship

05/06/2025

They say the ocean speaks in whispers of waves. Today, on , we hear a different kind of whisper—one muffled by layers of plastic. Imagine a sea turtle, its path blocked by a plastic bag; or a schoolyard where children kick a soccer ball past mountains of discarded bottles. Nature is calling out, yet too often, we cover our ears with convenience and habit.

At HATOF Foundation, we believe it’s a voice worth listening to. Each piece of is a plea: “I’m choking.” Every shoreline strewn with wrappers is a reminder: “I’m hurting.” But here’s the truth—this story doesn’t have to end in tragedy.

Picture a future where that same sea turtle glides unencumbered, where soil brims with life instead of microplastics, where children breathe air untainted by synthetic debris. That vision lives within our choices today. We give nature a fighting chance by refusing single-use plastics, embracing recycling, and championing eco-friendly innovations.

So let’s answer its call. Let’s turn our guilt into action—swap that plastic straw for reusable options like stainless steel, glass, etc., choose reusable shopping bags, and support startups inventing biodegradable solutions. Each small step is a promise to ourselves and the planet that we will no longer ignore this warning.

On this World Environment Day and beyond, let’s write a new chapter—where humanity stands as guardian, not destroyer. Together, we can , restore our oceans, enrich our soils, and protect the air we share.

Because when nature speaks, we must listen. 🌍💚
