The Gella Journey (Why education)

My name is Alexander Bewong, the CEO and founder of Gella Group. I am from a very humble beginning. Born on 1st May, 1972 in Tarkwa, my mother was in school and living with her uncle when she had me. She could hardly make ends meet before she got pregnant. Taking care of herself and me was very difficult. She could not even afford one square meal a day, so she decided to send me to my grandfather in our hometown, Nandom-Ko in the Upper West region of Ghana. Life as I remember it was hard!

I was not in school most of the time but this I remember, when I was about age six (6), my mother and her new husband came to Nandom, and she told me, “Alex, we are here to pick you up”. I couldn’t believe my ears, but as you know, the innocent heart of a child trusts without borders and believes all things. I packed my bags and on that day, my life took a big turn around.

That day, I became a Bewong! son with a home and a future. My father, Naaba ‘Gilbiri’ Bewong gave me everything a son could need and want. Most importantly an education, but it was not handed to me on a silver platter. I went to good schools through my basic education to Senior High School. Afterwards, I acquired a higher national diploma in Electrical engineering. At age 25, after several job disappointments, I started a small electrical shop at my parents’ house, which evolved to become Gella Electrolex Services Limited (Gella Group) a household name for the best electrical engineering and services company in the Western Region of Ghana.
