Northern Girl Initiative - NGI

Northern Girl Initiative - NGI NGI is a Rgd Non-profit Organization that creates opportunities and provide support services to Girls

The “Northern Girl” is a metaphor to depict the vision of what and how the next generation of girls and women from the Northern Region of Ghana should look like. Embedded in this vision is a transformative element that targets opportunities and outcomes for girls and women from the region. It also entails a vision of girls and women as agents of change, whose empowerment will enhance their wellbei

ng and that of their households and the country at large. Having experienced the desolation of poverty and transcended socio-cultural barriers while growing up in the Northern Region, two sisters - Sahada Alolo and Dr. Namawu Alolo – conceived and developed the Northern Girl Initiative. The Northern Girl uses innovative channels to bridge key gender differences in Northern Region of Ghana. The initiative serves a catalyst to leverage opportunities for girls to scale new heights. Undoubtedly, women and girls face numerous challenges in the region. As such, it is fundamental to embrace strategic prioritisation of the areas of support in order to ensure maximum value addition on gender-related investments. The Northern Girl initiative therefore seeks to catalyse, convene and connect women and girls to important opportunities, particularly in the education sector and on the labour market. It is a vertical initiative where women themselves identify the prerequisites for their transition to the next stage in life. In so doing, a differentiated approach is used to identify and support the Northern Girl’s transformation. Linking girls and women to critical resources therefore becomes a crucial step in the barriers that undermine their progress.

Northern Girl Initiative strongly condemns the assault, sextortion, and online abuse of a young woman in Tamale who was allegedly assulted, filmed in a vulnerable state, blackmailed, and further humiliated through the circulation of unlawful intimate content online.

No girl or young woman deserves to be stripped of her dignity, privacy, or sense of safety.

This incident is not just about one victim. It is a painful reminder of the growing dangers women and girls face both offline and online. Recording someone without consent, using intimate content for blackmail or sextortion, and circulating explicit content online are not only immoral, they may constitute serious criminal offences under Ghanaian law, including the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).

Every repost, share, or circulation of such content contributes to the victim’s trauma and may amount to participation in an unlawful act.

If your privacy is violated:
• Report immediately to the Ghana Police Service or DOVVSU
• Request a digital forensic investigation
• Contact the Cyber Security Authority for content takedown support
• Seek legal protection and support immediately

Do not wait for the content to spread before taking action. We thank the Ghana Police Service for their swift intervention in this matter. We however urge them to update the general public about the progress of the investigation.

Protecting the dignity, safety, and humanity of vulnerable girls and young women is a collective responsibility. We must reject all forms of violence, exploitation, humiliation, and online abuse, and build a society rooted in compassion, accountability, respect, and protection for every girl.
