Alhassan Fakiha is a professional football player. She plays for Northern Ladies FC which is one of four Tamale-based teams in Ghana’s Premier League. In total, 10 teams qualify for the league, and Northern Ladies FC has been a staple in the Premier League since 2013.
Fakiha is a neutral player, but her coach positions her as a striker. She attends football training five times a week and usually plays friendly matches on the weekend – when there are no league matches, of course.
When we visit Fakiha for the first time, she’s at her apprenticeship. Here, she learns how to design, sew, and tailor clothing. She finishes the apprenticeship this summer.
When she was first introduced to Plan B Club, Fakiha had no other plans for her future besides football. She has now.
Because even though she is a tremendously talented player, the competition is tough, and the sport is not a guaranteed livelihood even for the very best players. That is why she’s extra focused on developing her skills in tailoring and designing.
She shows us a dress that she is about to finish. It has been ordered by a customer, and now she is just adding her final touches. She will not be paid for the dress, because her work is part of the apprenticeship.
Asking Fakiha about her dreams for the future now, she talks about grand ambitions within both sport and business. She still wants to be a professional footballer and represent her country on the international stage. But she also wants to be a professional clothing designer and open her own shop.
