From the landing beaches of Sekondi to the fish markets of Elmina, Day Two of His Excellency, John Mikal Kvistad’s of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Accra , field visit was all about listening, learning, and connecting with the people behind Ghana’s fisheries sector.

The day began with interactions with market women at the Sekondi Landing Beach (Western Region), who shared stories of changing fish catches, local fish species, fishing seasons, and the realities of fish trading before seafood reaches our plates.

In Shama, the delegation joined a community durbar with the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Fisheries GH) , Hon Emelia Arthur , who spoke about ongoing and future opportunities for fisheries development in the area, including plans for a fishing harbour and a plastic recycling initiative.

At Cewefia Ghana ‘s fish processing centre, women processors demonstrated the use of the Ahotor Oven and shared how it has improved their working conditions compared to traditional smoking methods. They also called for greater access to the technology to benefit more processors across coastal communities.

The visit concluded in Elmina, where the delegation interacted with fishers, processors, our co-implementing partner EJF Ghana, and the Fisheries Commission HQ. of the Central Region while learning more about the diversity of fish species that support livelihoods along Ghana’s coast.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed and engaged with the delegation throughout this insightful two-day journey.

From reports to reality.

Hen Mpoano welcomed His Excellency, John Mikal Kvistad, Norwegian Ambassador to Ghana, to the Western Region as part of a two-day field visit focused on understanding the impact of Norwegian-supported initiatives in Ghana's coastal communities.

The visit began with an interaction with Hen Mpoano staff implementing the Sustainable Oceans Project (SOP), Gender Responsive Conservation (GRC) Project, and the Economic Mobility and Protection of Women, Youth and Ecosystems for Resilient Fisheries (EMPoWER) Project.

The delegation then travelled through several coastal communities and historic forts, gaining a deeper appreciation of the history, culture, and livelihoods that shape Ghana's coastline. At Princess Town, beneficiaries of alternative livelihood interventions under the GRC Project shared their experiences, lessons, and aspirations for the future.

A key highlight of the day was a visit to Cape Three Points, home to Ghana's first Marine Protected Area, where the delegation toured WR-AH-001 Greater Cape Three Points (GCTP) ,the first locally registered research vessel of its kind in Ghana, developed by Hen Mpoano to support scientific research, monitoring, and enforcement within the MPA.

Reflecting on the experience, Ambassador Kvistad remarked that it was time to move beyond reading reports and meet the people behind the work, gaining a first-hand appreciation of the impact, opportunities, and challenges shaping coastal communities.

For more than 13 years, Hen Mpoano has worked alongside coastal communities, government institutions, traditional leaders, fishers, fish processors, researchers, and development partners to promote sustainable fisheries and marine conservation in Ghana.

This June, we are proud to join the global ocean community in Mombasa, Kenya, for the 11th Ocean Conference under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.”

We look forward to sharing Ghana’s remarkable journey towards the declaration of the country’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA), highlighting the role of science, community participation, stakeholder engagement, and local stewardship in making this milestone possible.

The conference will also provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and learn from global efforts in marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, blue economy development, climate resilience, ocean science, and coastal livelihoods.

Follow us for updates from Kenya as we continue working towards healthier oceans and thriving coastal communities.

Strengthening Community Leadership for Ghana's First Marine Protected Area

The successful implementation of the Greater Cape Three Points Marine Protected Area (GCTP MPA) will depend on the active involvement of the people who live, work, and depend on these coastal and marine resources.

To support this, members of the Community Consultative Committees (CCCs) and the Management Executive Committee (MEC) recently participated in a capacity-building workshop organised by Hen Mpoano.

The CCCs and MEC are local governance structures made up of representatives from fishing communities, traditional authorities, women processors, fishers, government institutions, and other stakeholder groups. Together, they will play a key role in guiding, supporting, and overseeing the implementation of Ghana's first Marine Protected Area.

During the workshop, participants explored the journey that led to the declaration of the MPA, the roadmap for implementation, and the process for developing the MPA Management Plan. Members also shared valuable local ecological knowledge, reflecting on how fisheries resources, fishing practices, mangroves, and marine ecosystems have changed over the past three decades.

Beyond the discussions, participants expressed their commitment to supporting the co-management of the MPA through advocacy, awareness creation, peer-to-peer engagement, and encouraging compliance with fisheries regulations. Members also pledged to help champion responsible fishing practices and support efforts to reduce Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

As Ghana's first Marine Protected Area moves from declaration to implementation, community leadership and stewardship will remain at the heart of its success.
