Before we could sit with the girls in Ayensuano, before we could open the conversations that matter most, we had to knock on the right door first.

This week, Ark Development Organization team walked into the District Education Directorate with one purpose: to lay the groundwork for something meaningful.

As part of the Project implemented by Ark Development Organization under the Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership โ€“ Ghana (RWVLG) programme by Plan International Ghana, in partnership with Plan International Canada, NETRIGHT-Ghana, and AfriYAN Ghana, with support from Canadaโ€™s International Development โ€“ Global Affairs Canada, we came to present our program objectives, seek official permission to facilitate Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) sessions in our target schools and communities, sign an MOU and begin building the coordination structures that will carry this work forward.

The response? A door wide open.

With the Directorate's support, we are one step closer to reaching adolescents and community members across 10 communities in the Ayensuano District, equipping them with the knowledge, language, and confidence to understand their rights and recognize gender-based violence for what it is.

By 2028, the goal is clear: awareness, protection, and empowerment for every community we touch. The work has officially begun!

Not every project earns the kind of welcome the project received in Ayensuano District. But when a project truly speaks to the lived realities of a community; when it names the problems people have long endured in silence, leaders don't just attend the meetings. They stand up, speak out, and commit. That is precisely what happened across Ayensuano, and it is a story worth celebrating.

At Coaltar, Nanahemaa Asiedua II saw her community's needs reflected in the POWER project's design; financial literacy for women, and the engagement of men and boys in ending gender-based violence. She didn't just nod. She pledged the full platform of traditional leadership to champion gender equality in the district. A queen mother's platform, redirected toward justice.

At Ayekokooso, Nana Barima Boamah Bekoa spoke with the clarity of a leader who has seen what happens when communities are left out of their own development. "We are all stakeholders in this fight," he said firmly. He welcomed the POWER project's community foundation model, a homegrown approach to sustainable change, and committed to rallying the youth to the cause. Because in his eyes, inclusion is not optional. It is the foundation.

At the Ghana Education Service, the District Director of Education, Rev. Alexander Amanya, recognized what so many overlook: that empowering a child with knowledge about their own body and health is one of the most powerful investments a community can make. When children understand personal hygiene and reproductive health, they carry that wisdom into their homes; reducing disease, challenging harmful norms, and keeping girls in school. One lesson. A thousand ripple effects.

At Krabokese, Madam Faustina (Community Child Protection Chairperson) named the quiet revolution the POWER project is seeding: the recognition that women, youth, and persons with disabilities are not peripheral to community development. They are central to it. She stands ready to help build the environment where girls in Krabokese don't just survive, they flourish.

These are not passive supporters. These are champions. And with champions like these, the women and girls of Ayensuano are in extraordinary hands.

At Ark Development Organization, we believe that the best solutions come from the people who live them every day. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve spent the last few days in the Ayensuano District hosting inception meetings under the Promoting Opportunities for Womenโ€™s Economic Resilience (POWER) project.

Why start here? Before a single project activity begins, we meet with community leaders, stakeholders, and the participants themselves. These sessions allow us to:
โœ… Incorporate local wisdom into our project design.
โœ… Identify specific challenges to ensure no woman is left behind.
โœ… Forge strong, lasting partnerships within the district.

The project is implemented by Ark Development Organization under the Renewed Women's Voice and Leadership โ€“ Ghana (RWVLG) programme by Plan International Ghana, in partnership with Plan International Canada, NETRIGHT-Ghana, and AfriYAN Ghana, with support from Canadaโ€™s Foreign Policyโ€”Global Affairs Canada.

Together, we are building a Ghana where women's economic resilience is not an aspiration, it is a reality.

Ark Development Organization's Young Advocates under our Empowered Voices project with support from International Alliance of Dermatology Patient Organizations - GlobalSkin delivered a powerful in-person advocacy session to key health stakeholders and walked away with something even more powerful than applause: a public commitment from the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, Ghana.

Standing before the Regional Health Directorate (led by the Deputy Director in charge of Public Health), District Directors of Health Services, District Assembly officials, and District Health Management Teams, our Young Advocates delivered a bold, evidence-based message: Acne is a medical condition. Stigma is the real disease. And Ghana's health system must do better.

Their message was personal, painful, and powerfully necessary. Millions of people, especially young people, are suffering not from acne itself, but from the shame, silence, and stigma that surround it. They called out dangerous myths, harmful remedies, and the devastating mental health toll of a condition the world has too long dismissed as "just pimples". And they didn't just raise awareness, they made a direct appeal to the Ghana Health Service to integrate acne education into national outreach programmes. Practical. Specific. Actionable.

The Deputy Director responded, on the record, before his peers, with a pledge that stopped us in our tracks:

He committed to engaging adolescent health officers, gathering clinical experiences, and coordinating a regional response to acne, a condition that affects 1 in 3 adolescents and has never appeared in a single Ghana Health Service outreach programme.

At Ark Development Organization, we have always believed that young people possess the power and agency to influence decisions on matters that directly affect their lives and Koforidua proved exactly that. This is what advocacy looks like when young people refuse to be quiet. And this is what institutions look like when they choose to listen.

We recently had the honour of hosting a team from Ghana for a Commercial and Eligibility Check Procedure (KEP), an important step as we explore a potential partnership focused on strengthening citizens' voices and participation in local governance.

At Ark Development Organization, we believe in the power of process. Exercises like these are not just formalities they are learning opportunities that sharpen our thinking, deepen our institutional systems, and ultimately sustain our mission of creating a world of equal opportunities.

We are grateful to the team for the engagement and look forward to what this collaboration could become.

Stronger institutions. Stronger communities. Equal opportunities for all.

Ark Development Organizations stands with Anesvad in this fight. Through education, hygiene, and treatment, we can help these children win.
