Addictions are habits that start as a one time activity or try and then becomes impossible to stop, because the brain recognizes it and begins to demand for it.

Addictions come from the environment and what we expose ourselves to, people can get addicted to just about anything but the popular ones are alcohol, drugs, gambling, social media, tv shows, movies, smoking among others.

Sometimes parents transfer their addictions to their children, by exposing them early to alcohol, ci******es etc.

Sometimes the friends who come into our lives have these addictions, and the more we hang around them the likely it is to get convinced to join in these behaviors.

It is extremely important to note that when people get addicted to substances like drugs and gambling they are ready to sell personal or family property in order to indulge in the behavior.

Addictions can start as an adventure but over time, one needs an intervention to stop, so for those who have never tried gambling, drugs, p**n and other addictive habits, the best thing to do is to never try it, because one time maybe all it will take to be hooked for life.

The symptoms of addiction are many but what stands out is the anger and aggression the person displays when they are not able to access the substance or indulge in behavior. some also become, gloomy and withdrawn, their while existence depends literally on the behavior or habit.

We need to engage more with our children and teenagers, especially those who are in secondary and secondary schools, it doesn't really matter if they are in boarding or day schools, they need to have safe spaces with parents, teachers and trusted adults in the community they can confide in and tell their struggles to.

Meanwhile, if for any reason, you have tried any of the behaviours listed or another and you are struggling to stop on your own, or a family member is addicted to something, then the recommendation is to seek professional counseling. Almost all the government hospitals have psychologists ready and willing to help.

Many churches also have professional counselors whose services you can benefit from.Get help while you can.

Mediocrity and Near Success Syndrome.

Many people struggle to achieve success, and there are a myriad of reasons for it,one of them is mediocrity syndrome, this shows up when one is comfortable with little steps and not striving for more.

Mediocrity has indicators, and the numerous signs include the following; being comfortable with "good enough", resulting in a lack of interest and ability to push hard in order to improve or excel in areas that matter in life.

Many mediocre people "Lack clear goals", they are unable to set ambitious goals or work towards meaningful objectives. They are just okay, eating and sleeping.

People who get used to "routine and complacency," becoming used to being stuck in a rut and not able to challenge self to try new things or take risks.

When people make a habit of comparing themselves to others, or keep measuring their success by someone else's standards, rather than their own, they tend to have mediocre thinking.

Anyone constantly exhibiting and expressing fear of failure will live a mediocre life, without letting go fear of failure, gets crippled and held back from pursuing opportunities or taking risks that will make them succeed.

Anytime people stop learning or growing, learning and growing are important for growth, not investing time in personal growth, learning new skills, or expanding knowledge means stagnation.
Whenever there is a sense of settling for less, there is a prompt in the inner self that the person is accepting less than they can achieve or truly hunger for.

The good news is that mediocrity is "curable", identifying with any of the signs can help the individual to consciously work on the weakness and consequently turn the situation around.

Some Goals Will Be Difficult But Not Impossible To Achieve.

The year started with many of us writing down goals and tasks we want to achieve in the year 2026.

There are days frustration will set in because, it will look like the goals/ tasks set to be achieved will look impossible.

Remember that good things do not come on a silver platter, it will only be difficult but not impossible.keep pushing and keep going.

Leaders Must Be Fearless.

key characteristics of fearlessness include the following;courage, confidence, resilience, transparency and authenticity as well as the ability to challenge the status quo.

Fearless leaders have the courage to take risks, they are willing and ready to step out of their comfort zones and take calculated risks to achieve their goals. It can be financial, travel or leaving the job to go and study.

leaders consequently have the confidence to take tough decisions, they trust their own judgement and are mostly convinced about their decisions.

Resilience in a leader is a key characteristic of fearlessness, this becomes highly evident in the face of failure, these leaders view failure as an opportunity for growth as well as learning. These leaders are not deterred by setbacks.

Fearlessness allows leaders to be transparent and authentic, fearless leaders are genuine, honest, and transparent in their actions and words, this enables them to build trust with their teams.

Additionally, they are able to challenge the status quo, existing norms and are not afraid to shatter glass ceilings. They are also not afraid to drive innovation and progress in their area of influence.
The absence of fearlessness makes a leader weak and susceptible to control.Setbacks become recipes for disaster as they just cannot deal with them.

Travel and See.

The first time I traveled out of Ghana, I was 3 years old, i do not remember much of the trip but the subsequent trips to Nigeria to visit my dad who had moved there for work, I remember them vividly.

I think the best gift my dad gave all his children is the love for traveling, and I encourage everyone to travel, especially young people. Living in Nigeria as a Ghanaian gave me valuable experiences that have impacted my life positively.

Travel has benefits, even if it is for a week, a month or a year, it does not have to be a trip to Europe, it can be a trip to neighbouring countries. Travel means leaving your comfort zone, this puts you at a receiving end, at the mercy of strangers, it puts you in a survival mode.

Travel will enable you to know the character of humanity, that there are good and bad people everywhere, these experiences will help you understand yourself better.

Travel when you are young, it benefits the young but if you are no longer young, I encourage you to still travel, it is never too late to unlearn and learn.

You can start the travel experience with trips within the country, leave Accra to Tamale, or Ho to Axim, you will be surprised at the things you will learn even when you travel to a different region in the same country.

This year, i encourage you to start thinking, saving and planning a trip, it not only takes you out of comfort zones, it also forces the brain to think outside the box. Travel and see.

Cultural Shocks Experienced As A Ghanaian Student in Sweden.

Travelling for studies or work exposes one to different cultures and norms, and my case was no exception, I had traveled to a few countries in Europe before but never stayed for more than a month but my stay in Sweden had a different vibe to it, let me share some of the cultural shocks I experienced during my stay.

There are several of them but I will share six(6) of them, the first is that Swedes are very punctual people and do not tolerate lateness, it is important to be punctual to class if you are a student or to work.

Lateness is not tolerated and can offend or come with a cost, my personal experience with lectures, almost everyone arrives 15 minutes early to class and gets seated, by the stated time, class starts. I could see the lecturers visibly annoyed when people showed up late.

I was 30 minutes late to a Dr appointment once and i had to pay for the day's consultation even though the Dr did not see me, I had missed the time allocated to me, and had to pay for wasting the Drs time, then I was asked to book another time, be aware if you are planning to study in Sweden or work in any part of Europe.

The second is that you can drink directly from the tap, in my home country, i never drank tap and in Sweden i continued buying water from the store, even though every one around me was drinking from the tap, it took me over 6 months to be able to finally drink from the tap. The tap water in Sweden is acclaimed as one of the best in the world.

A lot of seriousness is attached to deadlines, try not to miss any payment deadline, be it rent or utilities, that should not be your story, there is usually a letter sent to remind and warn of the consequences

Subsequently, there will be notice of a penalty or extra charges and thereafter there can be a court case which would be put on your file in the system, making you the offender regarded as not being credit worthy, this can future transactions, people will not be willing to rent their home to you and I can have rippling effects.

The fourth is seeing people talk about the sun and coming out of their numbers to enjoy the sun whenever it comes out.

It was also interesting to see Swedes take time out from work, 5 to 10 minutes from their break time to stand outside and face the sun, just to soak in the little warmth from it.

This was more common to see when the sun comes out after the long winter months. I would be wondering why seeing the sun was such a big deal until i experienced winter and become part of the people that turn to face the sun at the bus stop or on campus. The sun shining is usually a scarce commodity in Sweden.

The 5th shock was the long darkness of the winter days, oh my God, the proper short days, long nights are found in Sweden, the sun disappears and sets by 3pm and it will still be pitch dark even at 9:00 AM in the morning, it was not easy for me, i had never experienced anything like that. coming from a place where the sun shine was a constant.

The 6th is the punctuality of the public transport system, train and bus drivers are rarely late, unless something out of the ordinary happens if not, they would be at the designated bus stop sometimes a minute or two before time and you better be there and ready to go with them. When i first arrived, i was always missing my bus until i re-wired and left home 5 minutes early to catch the bus or train.

I was always missing the bus by a minute and the worst feeling in the world is missing the bus, because it comes in intervals of 15 minutesore depending on where you live and missing one means missing the connecting train or bus. It usuall means lateness to the appointment.

If you are interested in travelling to Europe for education or work then stay glued, I will be doing a second part.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has come to stay and will definitely affect some career paths but it can never replace leadership, it is important to develop leadership skills in whatever field you find yourself.

"Perhaps the most important discovery in human history, the foundation of all religions, philosophies, metaphysics and psychology, is this: you become what you think about most of the time". be careful what you consistently think about.
