Community And Family Aid Foundation-Ghana (CAFAF-Ghana) Calls for Gender-Responsive Water Solutions on World Water Day 2026
ACCRA, GHANA – March 22, 2026 – Today, Sunday, March 22, 2026, the Community And Family Aid Foundation-Ghana (CAFAF-Ghana) joins the global community in celebrating World Water Day. As we reflect on the 2026 theme, "Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows," we reaffirm our commitment to accelerating access to safe water and sanitation, recognizing that the water crisis is deeply intertwined with gender inequality.
Global & Local Water Situation
The 2026 Reality
World Water Day 2026 shines a spotlight on the alarming global reality that over 2 billion people still live without access to safe water. In many communities, women and girls bear the brunt of this crisis, spending millions of collective hours fetching water, which hampers education and economic opportunities.
In Ghana, despite progress toward basic water access, the situation remains challenging. Recent reports indicate that while around 88% of Ghanaians have access to basic water services, only 44% benefit from safely managed water services—water that is on-premises, available when needed, and free from contamination.
Furthermore, in rural Ghana, many still rely on unimproved or surface water sources. The burden of this scarcity falls heavily on women, who are the primary caregivers and water managers, yet often have the least voice in water management decisions.
Reflecting on the 2026 Theme: "Where Water Flows, Equality Grows"
CAFAF-Ghana embraces the 2026 theme as a call to action to move beyond just providing infrastructure.
We believe in:Centering Women: Involving women in the planning, leadership, and maintenance of water systems.
Promoting Health and Education: Ensuring that schools and health centers have proper sanitation, allowing girls to stay in school and reducing water-borne diseases.
Sustainability: Managing water as a precious, finite resource that must be protected for future generations.
Our Commitment and Future Plans for Ghana
In line with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6)—water and sanitation for all by 2030 CAFAF-Ghana is taking concrete steps to turn this commitment into action.
Our future plans for Ghana focus on:
Solar-Powered Boreholes: Implementing sustainable, renewable energy-based water points in underserved rural communities
Gender-Inclusive WASH Projects: Specifically designing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure to reduce the burden on women and enhance their participation in local water committees.
Water Quality Management: Educating communities on water testing and treatment to ensure safe drinking water.
"On this World Water Day, we are not just marking a date on the calendar; we are committing to a future where every Ghanaian woman and child has access to safe water within their home," said Joseph Kwashie- PresidentAndCEO of CAFAF-Ghana, "When we invest in water, we invest in health, education, and equality. Where water flows, equality truly grows."
CAFAF-Ghana calls on the government, stakeholders, and partners to prioritize gender-sensitive, sustainable water solutions.
