As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I would like to share a few things about the Executive Director of Odo Serwaa Foundation. Odo Serwaa Anima Apaw, known by all as Mama Odo is indeed the definition of determination and zeal.

As a single parent, She has demonstrated an exceptional ability to push through in the face of adversity. Her determination is a testament and trait I believe every woman can emulate. Despite her limited resources, she is ever willing to ensure her vision becomes a success; bringing smiles to faces and joy in the hearts of underprivileged children, widows, the incarcerated, the elderly, and teenage mothers.

Ms. Odo’s belief in the advocacy, education, and empowerment of women and children, especially widows, orphans, teenage mothers, and the needy in society led to the creation of Odo Serwaa Foundation, a Non Governmental Organization which aims in helping the aforementioned groups of people to become successful and prominent members of society. From its inception in December 2021, a total of 120 women, including teenagers from the Ejura Sekyeredumase and female inmates from the Kumasi Central Prisons in the Ashanti Region of Ghana have benefited from livelihood skill trainings, women empowerment programs, donations, health screening, and counseling sessions.

*Decolonizing Philanthropy in Ghana.

A presentation by Dr. Helen Akolgo-Azupogo. Founding member of Meta Foundation, Ghana.

Philanthropy and development go hand in hand. Since independence, Ghana has experienced a fair share of philanthropic activities. Ghana still faces postcolonial challenges as there are wealthy men dictating how resources are used and what resources should be used for.

There is therefore a need for a recall thinking on philanthropy because it plays a vital role in Ghana’s development spanning from education, healthcare, to agriculture and social welfare. For Ghana to move beyond aid, we must shift power to the local sections and encourage philanthropic activities on the local level.

TERMINOLOGIES
1) Decolonization: to undo colonization, withdrawing the entirety of colonial powers, influence and structures. Ghana faces imbalance in political, social and economic power as a result of colonization. Philantrophy was birthed out of the concept that colonization caused food insecurity and underdevelopment.

2) Philanthropy: The desire to promote the welfare of others through donations and charity. A charitable act which includes volunteering expertise, time, etc. Modern philanthropy is accused of perpetuating dependency and letting others in power decide on issues for people whom they may not know, may never interact with, or may never step foot in their communities. This type of philanthropy comes with terms, conditions, and rules on how these resources should be used. Philanthropy is supposed to empower us to take decisions for our country and development.

3) Colonization and Philanthropy: Marked by a complexity of motives, consequences and legacy, these two share a long intricate history. European powers engaged in lgulanthropic activities as a civilization strategy eg. Missionary works furthered the goals of colonialism. Philanthropy thus became a tool of soft power, perpetuating a narrative of benevolence while subjicating communities and marginalizing said communities.

4) Giving for change: Giving should be impactful and transformative. Empower local initiatives and encourage local resource mobilization. Ensure that interventions are culturally sensitive and responds to local context, genuinely empowering communities to drive their own positive change.

Promoting Mental Health and Mental Health Awareness

Mental health is often overlooked and stigmatized. We must understand that it is an integral aspect of our overall well-being. Mental health issues affect millions of people worldwide, and because we fail to accept and seek help, a lot of people with mental health issues resort to alternative solutions to survive. This leads to a rise in drug and substance abuse, extreme anger, suicidal thoughts/suicide, depression and anxiety, amongst others. Everyone is susceptible to a mental breakdown (Many are mad but a few are on the streets). By understanding and promoting mental health awareness, all these alternative solutions can be avoided if not completely eradicated. Exploring the significance of mental health, the importance of awareness, and how we can collectively make a positive impact is a crucial step in achieving a healthy mental state.

Mental Health has a lot of significance including but not limited to;
1. Mind-Body Connection: Mental health isn't separate from physical health; they are deeply interconnected. Mental well-being influences our physical health and vice versa.

2. Daily Life: Our mental health affects our ability to function in daily life, impacting relationships, work, and overall life satisfaction.

3. Prevalence: Mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, are widespread. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

One may inquire on the importance or why it is important to safeguard our mental health and well-being. Securing our sanity brings a lot of benefits to our body, mind, and soul. It reflects in our relationships, friendships, and interactions with colleagues and peers. Some importance of having a healthy and stable mental health includes;

1. Reducing Stigma: Stigma and discrimination are barriers that prevent many from seeking help. Raising awareness helps break down these barriers.

2. Early Intervention: Awareness campaigns can educate individuals on recognizing early signs of mental health issues, facilitating early intervention and treatment.

3. Promoting Support: It encourages open conversations about mental health, fostering a more supportive environment for those who may be struggling.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness begins with you and I. We must make a conscious effort to protect our mental health because a nurturing mind, body, and soul equals a healthy you. We can make a collective effort to safeguard our sanity by;

1. Educate Yourself: Understanding mental health issues and their impact is the first step. Numerous online resources and courses are available.

2. Start Conversations: Talk openly about mental health with friends and family. Sharing personal experiences can help reduce stigma.

3. Support Organizations: Many non-profits and mental health organizations work tirelessly to promote awareness and provide support. Consider volunteering or donating.

4. Self-Care: Prioritize your own mental well-being. Practice self-care, seek help when needed, and reduce stressors in your life.

5. Advocate for Change: Encourage local and national policies that support mental health care access and promote awareness.

Remember, Sanity starts here and now, we must nurture our minds, bodies, and souls for a healthier version of ourselves. Promoting mental health and mental health awareness is a collective responsibility. By understanding the significance of mental health, we not only break down the stigma, but also actively support those in need so we can create a more compassionate and mentally healthy world for ourselves and future generations. Let us commit to this cause and work together to ensure that mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.

Happy Mental Health Day to all. Ayekoo...
