On Friday, 11th July 2025, Ghana achieved a significant milestone in its human rights and governance journey with the official launch of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP-BHR). The launch, held in Accra, brought together government institutions, civil society, development partners, and the private sector in a united show of commitment to advancing ethical business practices that respect and uphold the dignity of every individual.
Welcoming guests to the event, Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Ms. Mercy Larbi, expressed gratitude to all partners who walked this journey with Ghana throughout the NAP development process. She described the day as “a long-awaited step in strengthening the relationship between business and human rights,” underscoring the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in the implementation phase.
The Commissioner of CHRAJ, Dr. Joseph Whittal, in his keynote address, reminded all present that Ghana is now the fifth African country to develop a NAP on Business and Human Rights. He stressed that the plan is not just a document but a tool for real impact, calling for inclusive implementation that leaves no one behind, including persons with disabilities, whose needs were symbolically reflected in the provision of the NAP in Braille.
Partners who have supported the process from the beginning UNDP, Oxfam, UNICEF, the Embassy of Japan, FES Ghana, Action Aid and others, delivered fraternal messages of solidarity. They commended Ghana for the progress made and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the rollout and implementation of the NAP.
The event also featured the premiere of a documentary, sponsored by Oxfam, which captures Ghana’s NAP development process across the country. In addition, a dedicated Business and Human Rights website, sponsored by UNDP, was unveiled to ensure transparency and accessibility of information going forward.
The NAP was officially launched by Dr. Sylvia Adusu, who represented the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Hon. Dr. Dominic Ayine. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect rights and ensure corporate accountability through national policy and legal frameworks.
With the NAP now launched, Ghana takes another strong step toward aligning business practices with the principles of human rights, justice, and sustainable development.
