STATEMENT ON WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2026
Theme: "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down"
Today, as the world marks World Hepatitis Day 2026, Healthy LIVER Foundation – Ghana joins the global community in reaffirming our commitment to eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
This year's theme, "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," calls on all of us to break down the barriers that prevent people from accessing hepatitis prevention, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and care. These barriers include limited awareness, stigma, misinformation, delayed diagnosis, and unequal access to life-saving health services.
In Ghana, viral hepatitis remains a significant public health challenge, with many people living with hepatitis B or C unaware of their infection. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to preventing liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and unnecessary deaths.
Healthy LIVER Foundation – Ghana urges:
- The public to know their hepatitis status through regular screening.
- Healthcare providers to strengthen hepatitis education, testing, and linkage to care.
- Government, policymakers, and development partners to invest in expanding access to affordable hepatitis testing, treatment, and vaccination where applicable.
- Communities to reject stigma and support individuals living with viral hepatitis with compassion and understanding.
While there is no vaccine for hepatitis C, it is now curable in more than 95% of cases with effective antiviral medicines. Hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination and successfully managed with appropriate medical care. Together, these advances give us hope that eliminating viral hepatitis is an achievable goal.
As an organisation dedicated to liver health advocacy, education, and support, Healthy LIVER Foundation – Ghana remains committed to raising awareness, promoting early screening, supporting those affected, and collaborating with partners to build a hepatitis-free Ghana.
On this World Hepatitis Day, let us all break down the barriers, increase awareness, encourage testing, fight stigma, and ensure that no one is left behind.
Together, we can eliminate hepatitis. Together, we can save lives.
Happy World Hepatitis Day 2026!
