OMS Farewell Durbar
The Chiefs and people of communities in the Mamprugu Moagduri District in the North East Region have come together in a colourful durbar to celebrate the impact of AfriKids Ghana's One Million Smiles Programme.
The One Million Smiles Programme is a five year strategy implemented in Binduri and Builsa South districts of Upper East and the Mamprugu Moagduri District in the North East Region. It integrates education, child protection, and health to boost early enrolment, retention, transition, and learning outcomes. At the same time, it tackles harmful practices such as child labour, child marriage, school dropouts, parental neglect, and other abuses, ensuring children are kept healthy, safe, and in school.
At the farewell durbar, the heartfelt words from chiefs, teachers, mothers, and children — all sharing how OMS has changed their lives since 2022.
• More children are in school.
• Child and forced marriages have dropped sharply.
• STEM education is thriving — Kunkwa community alone now has 21 former STEM Girls studying science at SHS.
• Families are earning better livelihoods, able to buy school materials and support their children’s learning.
The District Manager Matthew Abagna, reflected on the journey, praising the commitment of chiefs, teachers, and families who carried the programme forward. The OMS Key interventions were formally handed over to stakeholders, with GES, DSW/CD, and community leaders pledging to sustain the gains.
This wasn’t just a farewell. It was a celebration of change — and a promise to keep building on what the OMS has achieved over the years.
