JUNIOR CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, SWEDRU, GHANA
In 2014 when CRRECENT visited Swedru Junior Correctional Centre. The Principal then indicated that the Centre had not received funds from Government for the past two years.
Recently when CRRECENT visited the Centre, the situation had become very alarming. For the past 14 years the the Centre continues to be without funding for upkeep of the young people in detention. The Vocational School has been the support for the boys in detention, when school is on vacation the boys go without food. The supervisors at the Centre have to raise funds from the community to feed the children.
However, the courts continue to sentence delinquent children to the Centre. Recently, before the 2026, according to the supervisors there were 20 boys in detention. Let's all join hands to get support for the Centre.

Ghana today has achieved gender parity in basic education. CRRECENT sounded the alarm in 2018 of boys falling out of school at an alarming rate. Today Education Watch has confirmed the terrible situation of boys falling out of school in Ghana. CRRECENT work in 2018 established that boys then felt discriminated against by the channeling of large resources into girls Education to the exclusion of boys. Secondly, rural poverty pushed most boys then to engage in child labour to provide for their education, at the same time having money in their pockets to give out to their girl friends. The pressure was too much for the boys pushing some out of school.
CRRECENT position is that while it is equally bad for boys and girls to be out of school, the path chosen by boys after dropping out of school is troubling and dangerous to society. A number of them end up in detention for minor offences such as stealing food, while others take to armed robbery and murder. When they fall into such unfortunate situations bringing them back to normal social life becomes a problem.
Ghana today is facing a double agony: male population declining and boys dropping out of school at an alarming rate.
We urgently call on stakeholders to rise up to address this emerging challenge. We can't afford to manage this emerging challenge with kids gloves. It is very costly and time consuming to bring back one boy that falls into delinquent life back into normal acceptable social life.
