Clean-Up Exercise at Akatsi South Market Square Ahead of Avenor Tutudo Za
The Save the City Team, in collaboration with the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly, embarked on a massive clean-up exercise at the Akatsi Township and Akatsi South Market Square in preparation for the upcoming Avenor Tutudo Za Festival.

The exercise saw traders, youth groups, assembly staff, and community volunteers coming together to sweep, desilt drains, collect waste, and tidy up the market and its surroundings. The initiative aimed not only to beautify the town ahead of the festival but also to promote environmental cleanliness and public health among residents.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Honourable Dagba who joined the team during the exercise, expressed deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the Save the City Team. He commended their consistent efforts in keeping Akatsi clean and emphasized the Assembly’s continued commitment to supporting such community-driven initiatives.

He further urged all residents to adopt proper waste management practices and take pride in maintaining a clean and healthy environment, especially as the municipality prepares to welcome visitors for the Avenor Tutudo Za celebrations.

The clean-up exercise marks yet another step in the ongoing campaign to make Akatsi one of the cleanest and most environmentally conscious municipalities in the Volta Region.

SURVEY ON HOW TO TACKLE LITTERING IN AKATSI SOUTH
During our recent survey at the Akatsi South Market, we observed that most of the gutters are heavily choked with plastic bottles, sachet rubbers, can bottles, and polythene bags. These waste materials block the free flow of water, causing frequent flooding, especially during rainfall. The situation not only affects traders and customers but also creates an unpleasant environment. To address this challenge, we suggest the creation of designated rubbish collectors for such waste materials within the market. Additionally, we recommend that laws against littering the environment be strictly enforced to ensure cleanliness and protect public health.

CONCERN ISSUES TO ACT FAST TOWARDS TO.
Whenever it rains, the Akatsi South Market becomes severely devastated. The entire area gets flooded as most of the gutters are choked with plastic waste, rubbers, and other foreign materials. The poor drainage system causes water to overflow, flooding stalls and even crossing the main road, making movement difficult for traders and buyers. The stagnant, dirty water also poses health risks and damages goods in the market. Due to this recurring problem, we have decided to work continuously to clear and maintain the gutters ahead of the upcoming Avenor Tutudo Za celebration, ensuring the market remains clean and accessible for everyone.

Akatsi South Market Day two of the scheduled clean-up exercise could not take place due to heavy rainfall that started early in the morning and persisted throughout the day.

The continuous downpour made it impossible for the team to gather and carry out the planned activities safely. As a result, some parts of the gutters remain in a poor state, filled with debris, stagnant water, and waste materials washed down by the rain. The situation has worsened, with some areas experiencing minor flooding and unpleasant odors. The team yesterday used some yellow gallons to block some part of the gutters which help to block some foreign materials from spreading. The team plans to reschedule the exercise once the weather improves to restore cleanliness and proper drainage flow.
