Most people think the anchor β€œ hooks ” the seabed and holds the ship.
Not exactly.

The anchor digs in, but the heavy chain lying on the seabed is what keeps the *ship stable* .
The chain keeps the pulling force horizontal, helping the anchor stay buried.
If the pull is upward β†’ the anchor can come loose.
If the pull is sideways β†’ it holds stronger.

That is why:
