In Accra, journalists and whistleblowers living in WAJSIC safe houses took part in a three-day training organised by the Whistleblowers, Activists and Journalists Safety International Center (WAJSIC) and the Shelter Initiative.

Participants learned how to:
🔐 Protect their passwords and manage their digital footprint
✅ Verify images and information before sharing
🎬 Edit video stories using Adobe Premiere, on a phone or a computer

For people living under threat, digital platforms are both essential tools and points of vulnerability. This training aimed to address both.

The media landscape in the Central Sahel is facing an unprecedented crisis.

Our new landmark report, "The Sahel: The State of the Media 2025–2026," reveals a sustained deterioration of press freedom and journalist safety in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Key findings over the past three years are alarming:
📉 38 sanctions imposed on media outlets
🚫 26 foreign media targeted with bans or suspensions
⚠️ 48 documented cases of arrests & attacks on journalists
✈️ 31 journalists forced into exile

This comprehensive assessment, produced with journalists from Sahel Horizon, goes beyond the numbers to examine the legal, political, and security pressures reshaping journalism in the region.

A major step for press freedom and journalist safety in West Africa has just concluded in Accra.

The Whistleblowers, Activists and Journalists Safety International Center (WAJSIC) successfully completed a three-day training on investigative journalism and safety for its resident journalists on May 14, 2026. Supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana and the Open Society Foundations, the workshop brought together participants from Ghana and several Francophone countries—both in person and online.

Whistleblowers Activist and Journalists safety international centre is healing the healers. Restoring those who risk everything for the truth. 🧠🕊️

The Whistleblowers, Activists and Journalists Safety International Center (WAJSIC), with support from the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana, has held a three-day intensive mental health workshop for residents in hiding.

Facilitated by clinical psychologist Dr. Rita Appiah-Danquah, the workshop focused on trauma, PTSD, emotional resilience, forgiveness, and breaking the cycle of violence.

One participant—a radio presenter attacked and shot in the hand—shared how the workshop transformed his desire for vengeance into emotional recovery:

"My intention was that when I recover from here, I am going back to the battlefield. But per the topics we have gone through, it has washed all those things from my mind."

They fled for their lives. Now they are learning to live again.
