The continuent "Africa" currently accounts for a small share of global emissions—just 1.04 metric tons of CO₂ per capita, compared to the global average of 4.69.

Yet, the continent is among the most vulnerable to its devastating effects.
This disparity highlights the critical need for global equity and localized sustainable development in the fight against the climate crisis.

At NexGen Deutsche-Afrik, we believe the path forward lies in strengthening partnerships, and accelerating sustainable investment across Africa.

Because the future of climate resilience will be shaped by where—and how—we invest today.

Africa contributes less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet remains one of the most exposed regions to climate risk. This is not just an environmental imbalance rather, a capital allocation problem.

Across the continent, climate-linked opportunities are becoming clearer: renewable energy infrastructure, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable transport, and resilient urban systems. What is often missing is not opportunity, but the structuring of these opportunities into bankable, scalable investment products.

Capital markets have a critical role to play. Stock Exchanges in the region can serve as conduits for green bonds, sustainability-linked instruments, and blended finance solutions that attract both local and international capital.

Climate risk is already translating into financial risk, but equally, climate solutions are becoming a distinct asset class.

The institutions that recognize this early, structure effectively, and deploy capital with discipline will not only drive impact — they will define the next frontier of returns.

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘?

Ghana’s ocean temperatures have already risen by ~0.5°C—and are projected to increase further in the coming decades.

This warming is expected to reduce fisheries output by ~26% or more by 2050, threatening food security, jobs, and coastal livelihoods.

Climate change is no longer a future risk—it is already reshaping economies.

There has been a steady growth in climate finance inflows to africa from 2019 to recent estimates, however the level covers only about 23 – 25% of Africa’s actual needs to meet its climate commitments.

Scaling up concessional, private, and blended finance remains critical to close the gap and support resilient, low-carbon growth across the continent.
