Following her visit to the Sang solar-powered borehole in Mion District on 6 May, H.E. Myriam Montrat, High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone, accompanied by the Head of Development and Senior Development Officer at Global Affairs Canada, continued her visit to SIGRA-supported project sites with a stop at the Kpegu Shea Processing Centre in Kumbungu District on 7 May.

The visit highlighted how Canada’s support is contributing to women’s economic empowerment and climate-resilient livelihoods in northern Ghana.

Funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Cowater International, SIGRA in partnership with the Kumbungu District Assembly, is constructing the Shea Processing Centre to help women move beyond raw shea production into improved processing, value addition and income generation. The initiative directly targets 97 beneficiaries, including 90 women, from Kpegu, Zangbalun-Kuku and Kprumi communities. Through the first phase of support, key infrastructure works have been completed, essential processing equipment procured, and beneficiaries organized into Village Savings and Loans Associations to strengthen financial literacy, savings mobilization and group management.

The High Commissioner commended the women’s commitment and highlighted the importance of investing in women and young people, while also ensuring that community infrastructure is sustained for future generations.

Through SIGRA, Canada and Cowater International are helping create practical pathways for women to increase their incomes, strengthen local enterprises and build more resilient livelihoods.

SIGRA was honoured to welcome H.E. Myriam Montrat, High commisioner of Canada to Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone Commissioner of Canada to Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone, accompanied by the Head of Development and Senior Development Officer at Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada to the Sang community in Mion District on 6 May.

The visit provided an opportunity to see how Canada’s support is helping communities respond to climate-related water stress through gender-responsive adaptation.

Funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Cowater International, the Strengthening Investment in Gender-Responsive Adaptation Project (SIGRA) in partnership with the Mion District Assembly supported the Sang community with a solar-powered mechanized borehole, now serving about 1,320 residents, including 780 women and girls. The intervention is improving access to safe and reliable water, reducing the burden of water collection on women and children, and strengthening community resilience to climate variability. During the visit, the High Commissioner emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment, youth inclusion, and sustaining community infrastructure so that the benefits can continue for future generations. Through SIGRA, Canada and Cowater International are supporting practical, locally led solutions that improve lives, strengthen resilience, and help communities adapt to climate change.

SIGRA in partnership with Farm Radio Ghana convened a CSO/CBO Capacity Building and Multi-stakeholder Content Design Workshop in Keta in Volta Region and Tamale in the Northen region. The workshop brought together 27 participants, including 21 women, to strengthen the capacity of local women-led CSOs/CBOs to communicate climate change issues, promote adaptation actions, and contribute to the design of a short radio program series for community awareness.

The workshop involved participatory sessions, where participants explored climate change challenges affecting their communities, including water scarcity, flooding, deforestation, soil infertility, food insecurity, migration, displacement, and rising temperatures. They also discussed adaptive measures, gender-responsive communication, and how to effectively use radio and other platforms to raise awareness and encourage positive behaviour change. The workshop also contributed to the development of content for a 6-episode radio program for the two regions.
