Being a handwashing hero takes more than clean hands. It takes the right conditions.

We can remind people to wash their hands, but what happens when there is no water or a proper place to do so?

That is why handwashing must be more than a message. It must be supported by access to water, appropriate facilities and a shared commitment to making good hygiene possible for everyone.

This Global Handwashing Day, our colleague Fauzia Aliu, Advocacy, Campaigns and Inclusion Manager, joins the conversation as a panellist at the 2026 Global Handwashing Day Virtual Technical Discussion.

Under the theme “I Am a Handwashing Hero,” Fauzia will be part of a discussion that invites us to think beyond individual habits and consider what it takes to make handwashing a consistent part of everyday life.

Because everyone can play a part in protecting public health, but everyone also deserves the opportunity to do so.

Let's celebrate the people championing better hygiene and keep asking the questions that turn awareness into action.

💧 A girl’s future should be shaped by her dreams, not the struggle to access clean water.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, build her confidence and pursue her ambitions. But when clean water is difficult to access, the burden can extend far beyond thirst. Time spent collecting water can mean less time for school, studying, rest and play.

These are not just everyday inconveniences. They are barriers that can limit girls’ opportunities and reinforce inequalities they should never have to carry.

In Ghana, empowering girls must go hand in hand with investing in the essentials that enable them to thrive. That means ensuring communities have reliable access to clean water and that schools have the water services girls need to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

This International Day of the Girl Child, let us move beyond celebrating what girls can become. Let us act on the barriers that stand in their way.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Gertrude Amissah Asokwah our new Manager, Strategic Partnerships, Growth & Resource Mobilisation.

Gertrude brings over a decade of experience in WASH governance, strategic partnerships, business development and resource mobilisation across Ghana and West Africa. She has worked with government, development partners and other stakeholders to strengthen partnerships, mobilise resources and support initiatives that drive sustainable development.

Her experience also includes contributing to important policy processes, including the revision of Ghana’s National Water Policy, as well as supporting efforts to build stronger partnerships and unlock new opportunities for development financing.

At WaterAid Ghana, Gertrude will help us strengthen strategic partnerships, explore new funding opportunities and advance innovative approaches to resource mobilisation that can support lasting impact.

We are delighted to have her join the team and look forward to the experience, ideas and energy she brings to our work.

A garden can grow more than vegetables. It can grow healthier families. 🌱

Through the WASH Nutrition Plus project, the HarvestHer Garden is helping women grow organic vegetables that support both their household nutrition and their livelihoods.

For women and families, access to nutritious food is closely connected to maternal health. Having vegetables available at home can help improve dietary diversity, while selling excess produce can provide income to meet other household needs.

But the impact goes beyond what is harvested.

It is about women having greater control over food, income and decisions that affect their families. It is about creating practical pathways to better nutrition and healthier pregnancies and families.

This is what happens when we connect WASH, nutrition, health and livelihoods We do not just address one need. We help create the conditions for families to thrive.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼? 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

In Bongo District, women spoke openly about their experiences with water, sanitation and hygiene in healthcare facilities.

They told us about unreliable water, inadequate sanitation, accessibility barriers and what these gaps mean for dignity, safety and quality healthcare.

But listening was only the beginning.

As part of our Time to Deliver Campaign, women turned their experiences into evidence and evidence into action.

Using citizen scorecards and community engagement findings, Women, led by Time to Deliver Ambassador Ms. Talata Asanyuure, presented a formal petition to the Bongo District Assembly, calling for greater and more sustainable investment in WASH in healthcare facilities.

They called for a dedicated WASH budget line, greater transparency and accountability, and meaningful participation of women in planning and monitoring.

This is the change we want to catalyse: women moving from being consulted to influencing the decisions that affect their lives.

Because safe healthcare cannot be separated from safe and dignified WASH.

We often ask: “How many people have access to water?”

But there is another question we should ask more often:

“Can people rely on that water service when they need it?”

Reliability, safety, affordability, inclusion and sustainability all matter.

Universal WASH means moving beyond access on paper to services people can depend on.

A borehole that breaks down. A toilet without safe maintenance. A health facility without reliable water. These are not just infrastructure gaps. They are system gaps.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴.

For communities across Ghana, climate change is already changing the way water behaves. Some communities face longer dry periods and dwindling water sources. Others experience intense rainfall, flooding and contamination of water supplies.

This is where 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

When communities regularly monitor their water sources, they can spot changes in water levels, quality and availability early. That knowledge can help them make better decisions about how to protect water sources, plan for dry periods, prepare for floods and prioritise local adaptation actions.

Climate adaptation is not only about big infrastructure. It is also about putting knowledge and decision making in the hands of the people living with climate impacts every day.

On , we are reminded that monitoring water is more than collecting data. It is giving communities the information they need to adapt, prepare and protect their future.

A healthcare facility can have doctors, medicines, medical equipment and modern buildings and still be unsafe.

Because patient safety is not only about what happens in the treatment room.

It is also about whether there is reliable water at the point of care.

Whether health workers can wash their hands with soap.

Whether patients can use a safe, functional toilet.

Whether the facility can maintain these services every day.

Healthcare associated infections are not simply an infection prevention issue. They are a patient safety issue, a health financing issue and an accountability issue.

For Ghana, WaterAid estimates that healthcare associated infections cost about US$1.57 billion each year and consume an estimated 4.6% of the national health budget.

So on World Patient Safety Day, perhaps the question should not only be whether our facilities have WASH infrastructure.

It should be whether that infrastructure actually delivers a service.

Safe care begins with the conditions in which care is delivered.
