Accreditation, funding, applications. The practical part nobody explains, and the part that decides who ends up in the room.

Session 2 of Navigating COP looks at how accreditation works, what routes exist for young people, and where support for participation comes from.

On 21 September, more than 60 young people joined us on Zoom to unpack how COP actually works: who sits in the room, how negotiations run, and where young people can shape the outcome.

🙏 A huge thank you to Tinaye Hazel Mabara, National Coordinator of Youth Climate Council Botswana, for leading a clear and energising first session. And thank you to every participant who showed up, asked questions and filled the chat.

COP stops being intimidating once you know how it works. That was the goal, and this room delivered. 💪

🌱 Investing in the Future: Policy Frameworks & Capital Pathways for Energy Innovation in Africa!

At the Future of Energy Conference 2026, the Youth Climate Council Ghana 🇬🇭 in partnership with the Resource Governance Campus Hub-UENR convened a dynamic side event bringing together young innovators, policymakers, investors, and energy-sector leaders to explore what it takes to unlock Africa’s next generation of energy solutions.

From access to finance and enabling policy frameworks to the realities faced by young entrepreneurs building from the ground up, the conversation highlighted one key message:

Africa’s energy transition will require not only bold ideas, but the right policies, patient capital, and opportunities for young innovators to turn those ideas into impact.

We are grateful to all our speakers Yaw Akyampon B., Gifty Owusu, Paul Osei-Tutu, Emmanuel Ayisi Larbi, partners, participants, and the Africa Centre for Energy Policy making this conversation possible.

The future of energy is being built today and young Africans must be at the center of it.

🌍 Most people have heard of COP. Far fewer could say what actually happens inside it.

So let's start at the beginning.

COP stands for Conference of the Parties. The Parties are the 198 governments that signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is very nearly every country on Earth. They have met every year since 1995, and this November will be the 31st time.

For two weeks, they negotiate line by line:

📉 How fast emissions come down
💰 Who pays for the damage already done
📋 What each country has to report, and when

Nothing passes by majority vote. Every decision is taken by consensus, so one objection can hold the whole room. That is how the Paris Agreement was reached. It is also why progress can feel painfully slow.

📍 COP31 opens 9 November 2026 in Antalya, Türkiye.

🌍 Last week, YCC Uganda joined hundreds of young climate leaders, policymakers, development partners, and advocates at the Uganda Local Conference of Children and Youth on Climate Change for a day of dialogue, learning, and collaboration.

📌 The delegation took part in discussions on Uganda's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) and the Road to COP 31 , contributing to conversations on how young people can help shape national climate priorities and push for more ambitious action.

💬 Sessions across the day explored climate finance, youth entrepreneurship, climate communication, children's participation in climate governance, and countering climate disinformation. Each one opened space to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and identify practical pathways for scaling youth-led climate solutions across Uganda.

✊🏽 These are the rooms where youth participation moves from presence to influence, and YCC Uganda is carrying those connections into continued work on securing a permanent seat for young people in national climate decision-making.

Building the next wave of climate trainers in Uganda.

🇺🇬Youth climate leaders from Youth Climate Council Uganda 's Regional Hosting Organisations are gathered today for a Training of Trainers workshop aimed at strengthening the skills, knowledge, and leadership needed to drive locally led climate solutions across the country.

👉🏻Held under the theme "From Knowledge to Action: Empowering Youth to Lead Solutions," the workshop gives participants a chance to learn from experts, exchange experiences across their regions, and work through practical approaches for engaging communities and shaping climate action on the ground.

Nothing learned here stays in the room. Participants will carry it back to their communities and regional networks through youth-led training, mentorship, advocacy, and continued climate action, multiplying the impact well beyond this one workshop.

A key part of the work involves translating climate issues into clear advocacy messages, building meaningful public participation, and identifying the decision-makers, allies, and platforms that can help push climate priorities forward.

🗣️ From policy tables to community organising, they are proving youth participation is not symbolic, it is structural.
🤝 From one region to another, they are learning from each other and building together.
