FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CFF-GHANA URGES GOVERNMENT TO SEVERELY PUNISH OFFICIALS IMPLICATED IN THE AUSTRALIA M**H DRUG BUST.
1. The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has become aware of the arrest of the alleged ringleader of a drug trafficking syndicate linked to the seizure of about 320Kg of methamphetamine (M**h) concealed in charcoal from Ghana and intercepted in Australia. We note with great concern that the magnitude of the drug seizure has once again placed Ghana under intense international scrutiny and risks to undermine the country's hard-earned reputation as a responsible member of the global community.
2. CFF-Ghana commends the collaborative efforts of Australian and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies that led to the interception of the illicit consignment. The arrest indeed is a major breakthrough for Ghana so far as the fight against illicit drug is concerned. However, the Foundation believes that intercepting the drugs alone is not enough.
3. As such, we recommend the following;
a) That Government constitutes an independent, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shipment. Any officials within the security services, customs administration, port authorities or other state institutions found culpable should face the full rigours of the law, regardless of their rank or political affiliation.
b) That government strengthens anti-narcotics surveillance systems at Ghana's ports, airports and land borders by investing in modern detection technologies, improving intelligence sharing and enhancing institutional accountability.
c) That there is urgent need for stronger collaboration among the Narcotics Control Commission, the Ghana Police Service, national security agencies and international partners to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks operating within the sub-region.
4. In conclusion, we want to emphasize that Ghana cannot afford to become a preferred transit hub for international drug trafficking syndicates. Further, we assure the Government and the people of Ghana of our continued commitment to advocating for transparency, accountability and stronger governance in the fight against narcotics and organized crime.
