We are excited to announce that construction works on the VAO Vocational Training Center in Brewaniase have officially resumed!

Despite facing a few challenges that caused delays in the project, we remain committed to completing this important initiative that will create opportunities for skills development, empowerment, and improved livelihoods for young people and vulnerable groups within the community.

The Vocational Training Center is expected to provide a safe and supportive space for practical training and capacity building in various vocational skills.

We are grateful to our partners, community members, and everyone who continues to support our vision. We look forward to the successful completion of the project and the positive impact it will have on the lives of many.

Over the years, governments and development partners have invested heavily in rural water infrastructure, helping expand access to clean and safe water for many communities. Yet, in several rural areas, many of these facilities are partially functional or completely broken due to weak management systems.

The Community-Based Management (CBM) model, introduced in the early 1980s, was intended to empower communities to operate and maintain their own water systems. However, many water facilities continue to face sustainability challenges stemming from poor governance systems and technical, financial, and socio-cultural factors.

At the Vulnerable Aid Organization, we believe sustainable water services go beyond infrastructure alone. This is why we introduced the “Strengthening Community-Based Management for the Sustainability of Rural Water Services” initiative.

Through our engagement with communities, one key lesson emerging is the issue of ownership. In many cases, community members perceive water facilities as belonging to an individual or family, rather than as a shared community resource. As a result, responsibility for operation and maintenance is often neglected. Factors such as weak water committees, poor communication, limited accountability, implementation gaps, and a growing culture of entitlement continue to affect the sustainability of rural water systems.

VAO is working closely with communities to rethink water governance, strengthen the CBM approach, and promote collective ownership and accountability for sustainable water management.

Grundfos Foundation - PDJF Ryan's Well Foundation Wings of Support eu can aid

On 6th May 2026, the Vulnerable Aid Organization (VAO) successfully held its first stakeholder engagement on community-based water governance in the Nkwanta South Municipality.

This important engagement marked the beginning of the “Strengthening Community-Based Water Management for the Sustainability of Rural Water Service Project.” The meeting brought together representatives from the Municipal Assembly and other key stakeholders to officially introduce the project and discuss practical ways of improving rural water governance systems.

The engagement also provided a platform for stakeholders to share valuable inputs and recommendations aimed at promoting sustainable, accountable, and community-driven water management for rural communities.

At VAO, we believe that sustainable access to safe water can only be achieved through collaboration, active citizen participation, and strong community ownership. We are grateful to the Grundfos Foundation - PDJF for the support through the community engagement grant initiative.

We are excited to announce that the Vulnerable Aid Organization (VAO) has partnered with the Grundfos Foundation Community Grant Programme to implement a new project titled “Strengthening Community-Based Management for the Sustainability of Rural Water Services.”

This project aims to empower rural communities to effectively manage and sustain their water systems through capacity building, community engagement, and improved accountability mechanisms. By strengthening community-based water management structures, the project will help ensure that rural water facilities remain functional, reliable, and accessible for the people who depend on them.

Through this partnership, VAO will work closely with community members, local leaders, and relevant stakeholders to promote sustainable water governance and improve access to safe and reliable water services.

We are grateful to the Grundfos Foundation - PDJF for their support and commitment to improving water security for vulnerable communities. Together, we look forward to making a meaningful impact and contributing to the long-term sustainability of rural water services.
