Amnesty International has been campaigning against the death penalty for nearly 50 years. Together, we have achieved a global progressive trend towards abolition. However, executions in 2025 soared to the highest figure recorded by Amnesty International since 1981.

Early today, we gathered with media representatives to officially launch the 2025 Amnesty International Global Report on Death Sentences and Executions.

The event provided a platform for meaningful discussions on the realities of prisoners on death roll and the need for abolition and advocacy for human rights and dignity for all.

Amnesty International Ghana calls on the President to commute all existing death sentences to life imprisonment. We also call on Parliament, the Attorney-General, the Judiciary, and all relevant state institutions to support and complete the legal and constitutional reforms necessary for the total abolition of the death penalty from Ghana’s laws.

The event reinforced the importance of continued advocacy and collective action in promoting justice and protecting human dignity. We remain committed to creating spaces that encourage awareness, inspire dialogue, and drive meaningful change.
