Amnesty UG Chapter Takes SGBV and Digital Violence Awareness to Haatso Market Complex
Haatso, Accra — 9 September 2026:
Members of the Amnesty International University of Ghana (UG) Chapter took the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) beyond the university campus and into the heart of the community, engaging traders and other members of the Haatso Market Complex on how to understand, recognize and prevent violence.
Held under the theme “Understand. Recognize. Prevent,” the outreach brought human rights education closer to community members and created an open space for discussions on the different forms of SGBV, its causes, warning signs, prevention and available support systems.
Participants explored how harmful gender norms, unequal power relations, victim-blaming, silence and limited awareness can contribute to violence. The engagement emphasized that SGBV is a human rights violation and that everyone has a role to play in preventing and responding to it.
A key component of the outreach was digital and technology-facilitated violence, reflecting the growing risks young people and communities face online. Participants discussed how social media and digital platforms can be used to harass, threaten, intimidate, shame and harm others. They were encouraged to practice digital respect, protect personal information, avoid sharing harmful content and seek support when experiencing online abuse.
Key Outcomes
The outreach resulted in increased awareness and understanding of SGBV and digital violence among participants. Community members gained greater knowledge of warning signs of abuse and practical ways to prevent violence in their homes, workplaces and online spaces.
Participants were also encouraged to become active bystanders by speaking up against harmful behaviour, challenging gender stereotypes, supporting survivors without victim-blaming and helping connect those experiencing abuse to appropriate support services.
The engagement further strengthened community dialogue around gender equality and reinforced the message that human rights apply everywhere—including online.
The Amnesty International UG Chapter remains committed to empowering young people and communities with the knowledge and confidence to challenge violence and promote human rights.
Ending SGBV requires collective action. Together, we can move from understanding and recognizing violence to preventing it.
