On 29 July 2026, Amnesty International Ghana met with the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection to advance the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill and strengthen protections for persons affected by witchcraft accusations.

Discussions covered the current status of the Bill, the vulnerabilities faced by accused persons, and emerging concerns within alleged witch camps, alongside opportunities to reinforce safeguards for those affected.

This engagement is part of Amnesty Ghana's ongoing advocacy to end the human rights abuses linked to witchcraft accusations. We remain committed to working with stakeholders to secure legal protections and safeguard the rights, dignity, and safety of vulnerable individuals.

Earlier this month, we hit pause and it made all the difference. At Amnesty International Ghana, we took time to step away from our day-to-day routines to reflect, reconnect, and renew our energy, not away from the work we love, but in support of the purpose that drives it and the impact we strive to make every day.

Our 2026 Staff Retreat created space for meaningful conversations, honest reflection, and collaborative learning. Together, we reviewed our progress so far, celebrated key milestones, shared lessons from across teams, prioritized staff wellbeing, strengthened our workplace culture, and aligned our plans and priorities for the months ahead.

The retreat also reminded us of the importance of connection. Through team-building activities and shared experiences, we strengthened the relationships that enable us to work together effectively in advancing human rights.
Because investing in people is just as important as investing in programs. When we create space to listen, learn, and recharge, we strengthen our ability to deliver lasting impact.

We're back at our desks with renewed energy, stronger bonds, and an even greater commitment to advancing human rights in Ghana. ✊🌍

🔴Still no law criminalizing witchcraft accusations 6 years after Akua Denteh’s fatal lynching. On 23 July 2020, 90-year-old Akua Denteh, accused of being a witch, was lynched to death in Northern Ghana. This tragic anniversary is a stark reminder of the urgent need to prevent further atrocities.
⚠️ Witchcraft accusations must be criminalized.

Ms. Osei brings extensive experience in human rights advocacy, programme leadership, strategic partnerships, and organizational development. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing human rights, promoting gender equality, empowering young people, and strengthening civic engagement.
Her appointment marks an important milestone for the organization as we continue to deepen our impact in promoting and protecting human rights in Ghana.
We congratulate Ms. Hannah Osei on this well-deserved appointment and look forward to her leadership as we work collectively towards a just, inclusive, and rights-respecting society.

Too often, women, especially older women are accused of witchcraft simply for being outspoken, independent, widowed, or owning property. These harmful stereotypes fuel discrimination, violence, and human rights abuses.
It's time to challenge the myths, reject the stigma, and stand with women whose rights and dignity deserve protection.
No one should be branded for who they are.
