The challenge
Water is source of life on Earth: it is vital to everyone. Access to fresh water has become a
very critical issue that sits at the crossroad of multiple unprecedented challenges faced by our society. In September 2015, a set of goals were adopted at the United Nations’ General Assembly, called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Water resources and related challenges are explicitly and ultimately addressed in SDGs 3 “Good health and well-being”; 6 “Clean water and sanitation”; 9 “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”; 10 “Reduced inequalities”; 11 “Sustainable cities and communities”; 12 “Responsible consumption and production”; 14 “Life below water”; “15 “Life on land”; 16 “Peace, justice and strong institutions” and 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”. Ensuring continued and affordable access to fresh water matters to everyone. Many innovative people and organizations are constantly developing projects and initiatives to collect, save, recycle, purify water, protect natural resources and improve access to water in areas of scarcity. Our vision is to enable every person or organization to contribute, within its sphere of influence, to this shared responsibility of promoting a more efficient use, allocation and distribution of fresh and safe water worldwide, for the benefit of everyone. The availability of fresh water highly varies across countries and regions, which indicates a vibrant potential for everyone to help reducing these inequalities. Connecting like-minded people and organizations, and building on their collective efforts and expertise constitutes an exciting potential.
