🪘🪘 GHANA'S PARLIAMENT APPROVES BILL, CRIMINALISING LGBTQ ACTS 🪘🪘

Ghana’s parliament has passed a new law that makes it a crime to support or talk publicly about LGBTQ issues. The bill will only take effect if President John Dramani Mahama signs it.

Ghanaian Parliamentarians voted on Friday May 29th and approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. The vote followed a recommendation from parliament’s legal committee. This is actually the second time parliament has passed this bill. An earlier version went through in 2024 while former President Nana Akufo-Addo was still in office. But he never signed it into law. Under Ghana’s constitution, when a president doesn’t sign a bill before parliament ends its term, that bill dies and has to be passed all over again by the new parliament. That’s what happened here.

The new passed bill will apprehend those found in same-sex relationships, with up to three years in prison. It also makes it illegal to fund, support, or speak about LGBTQ activities. That covers NGOs, media content, public events, and even social media posts. People who do this can get three to five years in jail. The law also forces people to report others to police. If you know someone is in a same-sex relationship or supporting LGBTQ causes and you don’t tell the authorities, you risk up to three years in prison yourself. The bill changes extradition rules too, so people accused under this law can be sent back to Ghana from other countries to face trial.

The passed bill added clear exemptions for three groups of professionals. Lawyers can still represent LGBTQ clients in court without being charged for “promotion”. Journalists can report on the law and related cases without breaking it. Doctors, nurses and mental health workers can also give medical care or counseling to LGBTQ patients without fear of being arrested. The idea is to protect basic legal, medical, and press work while still cracking down on public advocacy.

🪘🪘OUSMANE SONKO ELECTED AS SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT FOR THE SENEGALESE ANATOMY 🪘🪘

In a new wave for Senegalese and African democracy, former Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has been declared Speaker of the country's Parliament.

Mr. Sonko's name was removed in the voters register in August 2023 after convictions levelled against him making him unable to stand for his party during the March 2024 elections. He was appointed the Prime Minister on April 3rd 2024 by President Faye but was sacked this month for poor management.

In his first address, Mr. Sonko pledged to steer parliament toward laws that uplift Senegalese youth, strengthen transparency, and protect national resources from exploitative deals. Supporters across the continent view his rise as part of a wider African awakening, where citizens demand leadership rooted in dignity, sovereignty, and service to the people.

🪘🪘 CAMBODIA'S MAY 31ST DEADLINE SPARKS CONCERNS FOR AFRICAN MIGRANTS 🪘🪘

Cambodia’s Government has ordered all African nationals in the country to depart by May 31st, 2026, warning that anyone remaining after the deadline will face arrest, a two-year jail term, and an $8,000 fine.

The directive, issued and signed by Lt. Gen. Som Sopheak, Director General of Immigration, states that a temporary immigration waiver granted to people from African countries will expire on May 31st, 2026.

“All foreign nationals whose fines have been cleared must leave Cambodia on or before the 31st of May 2026,” the notice said.

Authorities warned that from June 1st, 2026, anyone found in Cambodia without valid status would be arrested at airports or any location. Offenders face up to two years in prison and an $8,000 penalty before deportation.

The Cambodian Police will begin nationwide operations to arrest overstayers starting June 1, 2026. The government said the move is part of efforts to enforce immigration compliance.

The announcement has caused concern among African communities in Cambodia, with many now making urgent travel arrangements ahead of the deadline.

🪘🪘SENEGAL'S PRESIDENT DISSOLVES CABINET AND SACKS PRIME MINISTER 🪘🪘

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dissolved his government on Friday 23rd May 2026, and dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, a decision that signals a formal split between two leaders who jointly led the opposition to power in 2024.

The announcement was made via a statement broadcast on state media. All ministers were relieved of their duties, with the outgoing cabinet instructed to manage day-to-day administrative functions until a new government is appointed, according to Oumar Samba Ba, secretary-general of the presidency.

The relationship between President Faye and Former Prime Minister Sonko dates to the 2024 presidential election. Mr. Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, was barred from running due to a defamation conviction. He subsequently endorsed President Faye, who was then a lesser-known party official, and mobilized significant youth support behind the campaign.

President Faye won the March 2024 election and appointed PM. Sonko as prime minister in April 2024, formalizing a power-sharing arrangement in which Sonko was widely seen as the political strategist and President Faye as head of state. The partnership defined the new administration’s early months.

Over the following year, public and policy disagreements between the presidency and the prime minister’s office became more pronounced. The split culminated in Friday’s dissolution of the government.
