A DAM IS A LIFELINE, NOT A DUMPING GROUND!

What good is talking about climate action if we continue to pollute the very resources our communities depend on?

This Sunday, Activista Ghana – Northern Region, with support from ActionAid Ghana, is taking action at Nyohini Community Dam! 💪🏾💚
We are bringing young people and community members together to clean up the dam, raise awareness about responsible waste disposal, and inspire collective action to protect our environment.
Because climate action is not just about what we say; it’s about what we do. Every piece of waste removed, every harmful habit challenged, and every community member inspired is a step towards a cleaner, healthier and more resilient future.

🌱 Shaping a Just Energy Future for Ghana

As part of ActionAid Ghana’s national programme during the Global Week of Climate Action, Activista Ghana joins government, civil society, youth groups, smallholder women farmers and other stakeholders in conversations on Ghana’s transition towards a sustainable energy future.

The dialogue provides an important opportunity to reflect on what the energy transition means for communities, livelihoods, young people and the environment, and how we can ensure that the benefits of a greener future are accessible to all.

At Activista Ghana, we believe young people must be part of the conversations, decisions and actions shaping Ghana’s climate and energy future.

A sustainable future must also be a just future. 🌍

What happens when countries spend more on debt than on tackling the climate crisis?

ActionAid’s new report, Debt Fuels the Climate Crisis: How the Finance Flows, reveals how the global debt crisis is undermining climate action in the countries most vulnerable to climate impacts.

The data shows:
• 93.5% of the most climate-vulnerable countries are in, or at risk of, debt distress.
• They spend nearly 25 times more of their national budgets on debt repayment than on climate action.
• Global South debt repayments are nearly 225 times the grant-based climate finance received from the Global North.

The climate crisis is deepening debt.
Debt is limiting climate action.
And the cycle is getting worse.

🌍 | Debt Fuels the Climate Crisis

As we mark the Global Week of Climate Action, ActionAid is drawing attention to a critical link: how debt and the global financial system affect countries’ ability to respond to climate change.
ActionAid’s new report, Debt Fuels the Climate Crisis: How the Finance Flows, reveals that 93.5% of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries are in debt crisis or at significant risk of debt distress, and are projected to spend nearly 25 times more on debt repayments than on climate action in 2026.

This is more than an economic issue. Debt limits resources for climate action, while climate disasters further strain public finances—disproportionately affecting women, young people, smallholder farmers and low-income communities.
For Ghana and Africa, we need financing systems that enable investment in climate resilience, food security, essential services, decent livelihoods and a just transition.

ActionAid is calling for:
🔴 Debt cancellation where debts are unpayable or unjust;
🔴 Reform of the global debt architecture; and
🔴 Adequate grant-based climate finance, rather than loans that deepen debt.
Those who contributed least to the climate crisis should not bear the greatest financial burden of responding to it.
