We want to appreciate our Mentors today!

Mentorship is not an easy walk in the park, though a fulfilling experience!

If you’ve been in mentorship, you will understand that committing to a year-long structured mentorship module is not easy. It becomes even tougher when there is a communication barrier (young girls with no access to personal phones and mentors on the run who can’t commit to physical sessions always!)

This was the typical case of our 2025 mentorship programme but our mentors still made it happen and we appreciate them so so much!

We however have 6 extraordinary mentors who went far above their mandates to deliver mentorship to our girls. They held consistent sessions, virtually and physically and climaxed it with the . Some even built projects with their mentees!

Hats off to you:
Esther Appah
Myra Myra Mariam Yussif Saeed
Theresa Ankamah-YeboahPhD
Hannah Elizabeth Addo-Biney
Sylvia Baah-Tuahene
Marilyn Asiedu Sefa

During the , mentees received the awards of mentors who weren’t present and that was a beautiful moment for these young girls as well.

Thank you mentors, you make the work beautiful and lighter! We appreciate all of you!

We look forward to another year of impactful mentorship with you all!

Highlights from the Panel

During the 2025 Bootcamp, mentors and mentees came together to exchange stories, challenge assumptions, ask hard questions, and build genuine connections.

One key highlight from the session the need for increased physical, face-to-face interactions, creating safe spaces for deeper conversations, honest reflection, and real-time guidance.

Another powerful moment was witnessing the confidence of our mentees during the panel session alongside their mentors. Seeing young girls speak boldly, articulate their aspirations, ask critical questions, and engage as equals was a strong reminder of what intentional mentorship can achieve.

Thank you to our mentors, mentees, partners, and volunteers for making this bootcamp impactful and unforgettable. Together, we are building stronger pipelines and a future where every girl is empowered to thrive.

Special thanks to our Moderator, Ms Rosalyne Baddoo ; the panelists, Mentor Ms Mariam Yussif Saeed , and mentees, Ms Adelaide (a JHS 1 student) and Ms Isabel (a level 100 Agriculture science student)

with Dr. Theresa Ankamah-Yeboah, PhD

As part of the ongoing Mentor Shadowing Series, Dr. Theresa Ankamah-Yeboah met with Isabel Yeboah, a Level 100 student transitioning to Level 200 in Agriculture at the University of Ghana . Isabel, who aspires to specialize in , drawing inspiration from our Founder Dr Justina Onumah (PhD) and her husband. She attended the session with her cousin, who is about to begin senior high school.

The session was organized in two parts.

First, a progress review and guidance meeting at Dr. Theresa’s office, where Isabel shared reflections on her academic progress, internship plans, and the challenges faced during the previous semester.

Dr. Theresa provided tailored guidance and motivation to help her strengthen her academic and personal growth plans.

Second, a practical and experiential learning visit to the Molecular Biology and Tissue Culture Laboratory at West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI). Isabel and her cousin were introduced to key laboratory techniques, including the preparation of nutrient-enriched media for tissue culture, and participated in hands-on practice.

By the end of the session, both participants expressed excitement and fulfillment.

Interestingly, Isabel, who initially planned to major in Agricultural Economics, is now developing a growing interest in Crop Science 😀, a testament to the power of exposure and mentorship.

We look forward to shaping the dreams of our girls through adequate exposure and mentorship!

Series 3

At GirledUp Ghana, mentorship is not just about inspiring dreams but walking side by side with our girls to help them reach their full potential.

In this week’s Mentor Shadowing Session (Series 3), our dedicated mentor Ms Mariam Yussif Saeed met with her mentees Stephanie and Kutorkor to review their weekly study timetables and reflect on their recent academic progress.

The girls shared that their last exams didn’t go as well as expected, and together they discussed strategies for improvement.

Ms Mariam will now be supporting them through weekly online study sessions, designed to strengthen their learning and help them secure straight A’s before their BECE!

Isn’t this so beautiful to see? If every girl has a Mariam in her corner to discuss challenges and solutions, our young girls will continue to dream and thrive!

At GirledUp Ghana, we believe consistent mentorship, encouragement, and intentional guidance make all the difference. We’re proud of Mariam, Stephanie, and Kutorkor for their dedication and growth! 🌸

📌📌 2📌📌

This week, we feature Mentor Mrs. Marilyn Asiedu Sefa who welcomed two bright young girls, Deborah and and Rhoda, for a mentor shadowing experience—their very first time stepping into a professional space like hers.

From the start, their curiosity shone through. They asked thoughtful questions about school, work, and time management, eager to connect what they learn in the classroom with the world beyond it. They even joined a virtual planning meeting, where one observed how listening is just as important as speaking, while the other reflected on the teamwork behind decision-making.

The day also included sharing their love for reading, receiving new books to continue their journey, and meeting Marilyn’s colleagues to understand how different roles come together in a workplace.

By the end, their reflections were heartwarming:
✨ “I loved seeing how ideas become plans.”- Rhoda
✨ “I feel inspired to think differently about my future.”- Deborah

For our Mentor, Marilyn, it was a powerful reminder that mentorship doesn’t always require big gestures—sometimes, just opening a door for young people to step in is enough to spark new dreams and possibilities. 💡

Expanding our Networks

Last week, our team had the pleasure of visiting Technology Empowerment Program (STEP) Hub, a dynamic space dedicated to empowering women and youth through technology and innovation.

During our visit, we:
🔹 Learnt more about the incredible work they are doing to bridge the digital divide.
🔹 Took a tour of their vibrant and resourceful hub.
🔹 Engaged in insightful discussions on potential areas for future collaboration.

At GirledUp Ghana, we believe in the power of partnerships to expand opportunities for young women in STEM and entrepreneurship. This visit was a strong step toward building synergies that can amplify our shared mission of creating inclusive and sustainable impact.

We are excited about what lies ahead! 🚀

We are happy to share some updates from GirledUp Ghana!

After almost 8 months of consistent mentorship, where our girls have been paired with incredible mentors in (or close to) their fields of interest, we’re thrilled to launch the next phase: Moments.

A mentor shadowing session allows a mentee to spend a day (or more) with their mentor at work, gaining first-hand exposure to what everyday life in that career looks like.

This experience is designed to:
✅ Inspire the girls to see what they could one day become
✅ Deepen their appreciation of the impact others make in changing the world

At GirledUp Ghana , we do not believe in cloning ourselves in our mentees. We believe in guiding them to be better versions of themselves and far better and different from us. However, these shadow moments are very important as we believe a lot in the power of !

We can’t wait to see the growth, inspiration, and connections that will come out of this next chapter of the journey!

We will be sharing some of the shadow sessions soon! Stay tuned!

Last week Saturday, April 12, 2025, our Founder, Dr Justina Onumah, joined in AI to celebrate International Women’s Day in a Hackhathon for Change where young ladies developed solutions to solve mental health problems in women.

She delivered an inspiring address on Advancing and Driving Impact in the Tech Ecosystem. In her remarks, she urged that:

📌Innovation thrives where ecosystems are inclusive, digitally empowered and collaborative and so urged the young women to seek collaboration instead of competition.

📌Youth and women have the power to contribute to inclusive innovation that drives inclusive development and so they must be part of the solution.

📌The future belongs to those who are ready to solve real problems with bold ideas and not those ready to complain with bold advocacies.

📌Young women are not just Divas in AI/Tech but they are a redefinition of the ecosystem. They should continue to but to .

A special shout out to the teams that presented their bold ideas to solve women’s mental health challenges. Keep it up!
